My absolute favorite for shrimp cocktail (Coctel de Camarones) and chicken and cheese enchiladas in salsa verde. The best salsa verde..i always order extra salsa. Service is a hit or miss, but the food is worth it! Update 7/29/2018 So, you all know that El Pueblito is my favorite go to place for tacos and Coctel de Camarones. We stopped by this past week for lunch. I ordered my favorites, tacos de tripas and an order of the shrimp cocktail (to-go), plus a shrimp tostada and chicken and cheese enchiladas (all pictured). My partner ordered Birria de Chivo (Goat Stew), a couple of the tacos de tripas and a tostada de al pastor. The server that we got this day must have been new or something because the service was all of the way OFF. After an extended wait time, our food finally arrived. The tacos were great, as expected, and the green salsa was nice and fresh tasting. The tripas are always cooked so perfect! How do they do that? The tripas have that chewiness on the inside and nice crisp on the outside, which adds a nice texture and added smoky-like flavor. My shrimp tostada was ok..seemed to be lacking something because it was a bit bland. The enchiladas looked like they had been either in the oven or under a heat lamp because the cheese that had oozed out of the enchilada was melted and crusted to the plate and whatever amount of salsa that they had, had dried up on one side of the plate. I like my enchiladas saucy, so I asked for more after we got our food, the server came back and said that they were out. 😒 My boyfriend's birria de chivo, was warm (NOT hot) and the server forgot the onions, fried chili peppers and seasonings that normally accompany the dish. He was fed up by this time, so he didn't want to bother asking the server for some. Though he ordered the small portion (one of his favorites), he did not finish it all because he said that there was too much fat on the pieces of meat and it had gotten cold by this time already. He didn't even touch his tostada al pastor. He made a comment "I don't know why we even came here." I ate the coctel de camarones the next day and it wasn't as fabulous as I remember. The flavor was spot on, but the juice was a bit thin. Maybe because I ate it the next day? Overall, after an extended time away and based on this visit, I would have to say that my beloved El Pueblito needs to have more attentive staff and strive for consistency with their food. It was busy that afternoon, but not once did she check on us unless we flagged her down for something. We all want prompt service and good...
Read moreThis restaurant is a "Mom & Pop" offering a small menus and somewhat clean environment. Avoid the restroom during your visit if you want to remain happy. Serving authentic Mexican cuisine with items such as "Cow Tongue" tacos. I absolutely love authentic Mexican food but this restaurant is not the place to experience the uniqueness of Mexico. El Pueblito Taqueria does not deliver in quality nor in flavor. I tried the "Cow Tongue tacos", "Fajitas," & "Chicken tacos." Thankfully, "Chicken tacos" were delicious and gratified my papillae. In short, the "Fajitas & Cow Tongue tacos" did not express the same attention to quality and delectable flavors as did the "Chicken tacos." What was absent from flavor in the main course the guacamole and pico de gallo made atonement for their loss. By that comment I am not saying they were amazing merely that they pacified the disdain for the others. I do not have anything pleasant to say about the restaurant salsa. If disgusting was incarnate this is its manifestation. If chips and salsa is as important to your appetite at Mexican restaurants as it is to me than avoid turning into the parking lot unless you simply need to redirect back onto the service road. The cost of this expression of authenticity is not working for them and serious improvements are necessary to get a favorable critique. So steer clear and drive on. See ya...
Read moreI read the reviews and it sounded awesome. So we visited tonight and it was far from what we expected. I understand that it's a dive, I understand that it's semi self serv; but the food is just barely 'ok'. The waitress spoke some English and was very nice; although she forgot 1/2 our food. The burrito was almost cold and looked to be a mix of pureed cheese, chicken, and rice. The tacos were filled with an abundance of dry and fairly bland steak bits and sprinkled with raw onions and cilantro. My wife got steak and shrimp fajitas. The shrimp still had the tails attached and were overcooked. The sour cream looked old and yellowed ( my wife tried it and stopped immediately for fear of food poisoning). Finally, the chips and salsa that came first. These chips were the standard 'homemade' chips from this type of establishment but the salsa was brown, really salty and tasted old. The green dip was like a mix of guacamole and salsa Verde but was neither the right color or consistentcy of either. It was milk thin and very spicy. Both dips were overly salty. I really hope this review helps. There are a few good Mexican joints in saint Charles and this isn't one of them. Try El Agave on 3rd Street or La Caretta down...
