I forgot to take pictures because I ate it so fast...I tried the "Chicken Vindaloo" today and was very pleasantly surprised with the whole experience. It took about 10 minutes to get the take out order which was very timely in my opinion. Everyone was friendly and eager to help me find something to try, and not scared after I named 4 allergens I needed to stay away from! I was able to do the full size Chicken Vindaloo with rice as it seems to be a solid egg-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, nut-free option. Granted cross contamination is still present at almost any place you go, so I am not able to say how well they do here but they are definitely accommodating and seem to be able to work with different dietary restrictions. They claim to not use any MSG (monosodium glutamate) in their cooking either, which is a huge plus in my book.
At home after mixing the chicken vindaloo with the rice, I had two solid portioned plates, making the $14ish meal quite worth the price. Not to mention the flavor was amazing, full bodied, & well rounded. The sodium content was just enough for me to enjoy without needing to add any additional salt. I did not find it to be overwhelming, but if that is the case, you can always just add more rice to the saucy chicken vindaloo, as they come in separate containers. I was suggested to try with "mild plus" spice, and that was quite nice. It definitely had some spice present there and you felt it a bit on your tongue and in your sinuses as one would with spicy food, but I think I would bump it up to medium spice next time and see how that goes!
At the end of the day, the meal was hot (temperature wise), quick, fairly priced and portioned, and absolutely delicious. 10/10 would recommend. They also have very nice, clean looking areas for sit down dining, significantly nicer than most other places around. They do not serve alcohol yet, but I think a wine menu at least, could go well with the food and...
Read moreThis place had great food. I enjoyed the chicken saag which was just the way I like it while my husband had the biryani with lamb; his dish was flavorful and the lamb was tender. The food is not the problem here.
I wanted to give this restaurant a 3 star but couldn't because of the food. Our service was at the least not attentive. Our server was impatient with us, he cut my husband off while he was still ordering, and his overall attitude was left wanting which I didn't expect as there were several glowing reviews specifically mentioning the service. I don't know the gentleman's name as he did not have a name tag on. I will say he had five other tables to wait on.
That brings me to the atmosphere. There were six tables needing to be waited on by one waitor last night, but there was plenty of other space. When I walk into small, independent establishments I usually get excited because of the strong energy in the room. I did not get that same feeling. The place itself looked it it used to be a casual diner. The tables, booths and general decor were nothing special.
The trend of restaurants right now bring a vibe of giving us a reason to take a selfie which is the mindset of most millennials and gen z-ers and the latter. I expected to walk into this place and feel like I'm walking into the exciting, bold, beautiful country of India and left wanting to take a selfie maybe tag this place in a post.
There is a South African restaurant in Detroit called Baobab Fare. It is a smaller, casual place, and when you step into it you feel welcomed. The passion for what they are doing is steeped in everything they do from the food to the service to the authentic, exciting decor. I think Spice Bowl could take a page out...
Read moreTonight, we ordered Channa Masala and Dal Tadka, which are both vegan. These are dishes we have been eating for decades! Opened the take-out containers at home and dipped the Naan into what we thought was a Channa Masala with a small amount of chickpeas but only saw potatoes and chicken! The dish that was supposed to be Dal Tadka has no lentils and tasted like chicken! The Channa Masala was Chicken Tikka Masala. No idea what they gave us in place of the Dal Tadka.
My sister took it back to the restaurant for the correct dish but the employee argued that the Dal Tadka was correct and refused to replace it. In the meantime, my stomach and my nephew's stomach starts cramping since we do not eat chicken (or anything from an animal). The restaurant refused to give a refund. On the phone, the employee kept talking over my sister and talked to her like she is too ignorant to know Indian Food. I will never come back here and I will tell all other vegans and anyone with an allergy not to come here. This place doesn't care about their customers with a special diet. They are not apologetic at all for the massive mistake they made and wouldn't give us our money back. Thankfully, we ordered through GrubHub and still...
