It is kind of difficult to give an overall rating as I feel that there were two distinct experiences to consider: the drinks and the food. Given that they brew their own beer, I feel it's worth giving special consideration to the quality of the drinks. However, seeing as this review is specifically for The Tap Room, I will use the restaurant experience as the primary factor in my rating.
The restaurant itself is a nice space with limited views of the brewing vats on the upper floor. The service was fine but the burgers were overcooked and dry. They were a good size, but we both requested them to be medium and they came out well done. We were hungry so we didn't make a fuss about it and ate them. They weren't bad, but they weren't great either. It was basically a truly average experience, hence the three stars. Aside from the burgers, nothing was particularly memorable, good or bad.
However, the drinks were a different story. The selection of beer was impressive for a small island brewery. I prefer dark beers and it seems that most smaller places really only focus on IPAs. St. John Brewers is an exception with a good number of different styles on tap. In particular, i really enjoyed the nitro stout. It was really, really good. My wife had what I believe was the grapefruit soda and was very happy with it.
Overall, I would say that they really excel as a brewery and I wouldn't hesitate to pick up some beer or have drinks at the bar. But the restaurant experience is unremarkable and it's hard to justify eating there given all of the amazing choices...
Read moreIt was a comedy of errors. First let me say the food was fine. Not amazing but over all good bar food. The drinks were good we got the Guava Goddess. But from the time we entered the hostess? And wait staff were abysmal. When we walked in 2 guy were in front of us to see if a ballgame could be put on. The hostess proceeded to take 11 minutes to figure out how to do so, stopping in the middle to put in an order. ( My 6 year old had to use the restroom badly at this point so this was doubly frustrating for us, however NOT her fault) We we came out of the restaurant my party (another parent with child was seated). It then took 8 minutes for the waitress to come by to take orders. We proceeded to wait at least 10 minutes per request for the waitress to bring what ever we asked for. Except when she charged the wrong check with our cards. Then it took her 20 minutes to return. I could have handled the wait had the restaurant been busy however it was not, there was however a large table of 6/7 of people every member of the wait staff seemed to know and visit. I didnât truly get upset till they began doing shots together after we had asked for the 2nd time for our check.
I have worked as every job of front of house and truly understand things get busy or you go into the weeds but as far as I can tell this was not that. This was bad service,...
Read moreThe food and drinks at the upstairs restaurant were amazing after our Reef Bay hike. The waitstaff was friendly and offered recommendations. The upstairs deserves 5 stars. My one star goes to the incredibly rude brewtique cashier downstairs. We had to go drinks and my husband had forgotten to put his mask back up after he took a sip outdoors. We walked in and she told him to put his mask up, and he immediately complied. We walked in excited to purchase souvenirs and then she rudely yelled that he couldn't drink inside. Which he obviously was not because he had just put his mask on as she asked when we walked in. We felt singled out and embarrassed so we decided to leave. Upon our exit, she very rudely said "this is why we don't like visitors to Saint John." Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this shop for tourists?! I know tensions are high during this "pandemic" but treating others with dignity...
