Neither the food nor the smoothies here were good. Ekaete's Pink Corner in Coral Bay had by far the best food and drink on the island. That's the short of it.
The long is that the smoothies just tasted like bananas, despite the other ingredients in it. I get that bananas are cheaper than other fruits, but it leads to a disappointing beverage. The food was similarly off—a member of my party who regularly eats Afro-Carribean refused to eat more than a bite of the rice, and the curry chicken was somehow both oily and dry. The chicken also tasted like it was just about to spoil; it had an unpleasant funk to it that the limited spices couldn't hide. The patties (spelled patê on the menu) similarly lacked any notable flavor.
We had an odd interaction with the stand's owner, Thomas. When we approached, there were three French men celebrating Pride Month ahead of us, and one of them was crying while being consoled by the second. The third was complaining that the restaurant had gotten his order completely wrong, and Thomas was yelling at him about how his kitchen staff were Haitian and spoke great French and would not have erred. Thomas launched into some speech about how he's "about building bridges" and how his stand is "number one on TripAdvisor." Thomas was then obsequious with my party.
In our experience, it seemed highly likely his kitchen staff screwed up. Thst same worker kept reading our order back to us and getting it wrong. But correctness seems irrelevant—Our Market Smoothies is a hospitality business and shouldn't be making...
Read moreOur Market Smoothies is one of my favorite places in St. John. First of all, my boyfriend and I are completely addicted to the #4, the mango, passion fruit, and banana smoothie. I'm not a huge smoothie person in general but this is quite literally the best one I've ever had. On our way out, I insisted that we stop by and get a smoothie one last time. When I ordered, the girl who was making them misheard me and accidentally made two #1s (which are amazing too, don't get me wrong, but it was my last one for this visit and as I said, I'm obsessed). This was totally my fault mind you, as she tried to clarify and I misheard her during this exchange as well. When I received the wrong smoothies I was simply going to buy two more and just give the other two away to some passerby's. However, Thomas, the owner, insisted on remaking them free of charge. You see, while we had been waiting on our drinks we had ample opportunity to talk to Thomas and get to know him. He's an amazing father, driven business man, and just an all around genuine guy. I know this story and review is long, but he really made an impact on me and my friends by not just providing an excellent product and service but by genuinely taking the time to invest in his customers. I'd recommend this place again and again, and believe me when I say we will be back to visit him every time we are in St. John....
Read moreAmazing and affordable. $5 for small, $6 for a medium, $7 for a large. Generous sizes, fresh fruit. I recommend the #16 (soursop, mango, banana). The proportions are best when you luck out and get more soursop than mango. Great tangy and sweet blend. The #11 (coconut, pineapple, banana) is great if you want a mellow, pina colada flavor. The all melon (#10) is good, but the watermelon overpowered all the other flavors that blend.
Also recommend the fresh whole coconut with coconut rum inside. There will be extra rum in the shot they give you to add later. Later in the evening, the coconut isn't cold, but no complaints. They chop it with a machete in front of you. Only shame is not having the option to eat the coconut meat inside.
Should be noted that you can spike your smoothie here, something I wish we did on the mainland! Never had been steered wrong by this stand, and have literally been here every day since I discovered the place. Friendly service, great quality smoothies, and a gem if you're in the area.
Also important: the stand is open LATE into the night past closing hours (if they close) during CARNIVAL FESTIVAL WEEK. Which is amazing, especially when thirsty during Carnival, which is the week leading up to July 4th, the biggest...
