Been trying to get to this place for a while, but the hours are tough for anyone working 8-5. Made a trip downtown Saturday 12/2 specifically for Mokaska - it was not great.
The negative experience started the moment I stepped up to the counter. I told the only staff member that I had never been to Mokaska before but I had heard they fresh roasted coffee beans daily on site for sale.
She stared at me in silence for while like I had alien antenna protruding from my face before sarcastically saying "yeeeaaaaahhh .... So? ... What do you want?"
I reiterated that I had not been there before and asked about their bean blends/roasts. I ordered a pour-over. I was hoping to try a few of their beans because ultimately I was looking to make them my new bean source. I love coffee and honestly spend more than I should, but fresh roasted and local sounded worth the wait and expense to me. I paid $3.50 for my plain pour-over coffee.
20 minutes later!
After the barista had taken orders and made coffee for 4 other customers I walked up and interrupted her while she was taking the order of a 5th customer. I asked if my coffee was done yet and she went "Oh yeah I'm sorry" and dumped my coffee into a mug without asking if I wanted it to go (which after a 20 minute I did).
I sat down and took a sip, but of course the coffee was pretty cool by then. To top it all off the air in the place was dusty. I get it's an old downtown building with few windows, but they need to get filters or something in there. The whole place...
Read moreI spent several days working remotely in St Joe while my child attended a theater camp, and I happened to find Mokaska on the first day. The staff is very kind, welcoming, and attentive. It's a great space with a fantastic covered patio, the coffee shop seating, plus a big gathering space in the adjacent room with many tables, board games, and a cute turtle in a tank. The food options were limited when we were there, and I never really got a clear answer about what they typically have available, as it seemed to change daily. That said, they made a delicious cinnamon, raisin, nut scone. I spent most of my time on the patio (they even have big oscillating fans that keep it comfortable on very hot days), and I was able to plug into an outlet and use their free high speed internet. My only issue with the "atmosphere" is that smoking is allowed on the patio. Of course, I could have gone inside if it really bothered me, but it was so nice being outdoors that I chose to just ignore it the handful of times someone was smoking out there. They do roast their own beans on site, which was a huge plus for my coffee loving husband. Definitely check this place out if you want a chill, welcoming place to spend a...
Read more3-7-19 Came in today after not being in for two weeks. Not greeted and treated very curtly both by the lady who took my order and the guy who came in shortly after to relive her. They had played a song before on their sound system for me but tonight they would not stating "there is a jute box next-door" after I asked polity. I pointed out to the guy that happy customers come back and he could have cared less and was showing off how tough he was for his friend who was also at the bar. One song and allot less attitude could have kept my business. But I guess since I don't come in "three or four times" a week as they guy said his regular customers do then I guess MY money and business is NOT as good as theirs. Will not be back in for a very very long time if ever. Two stars for them and the hot chocolate was terrible. Guy said "one and done" and I told him I would not be back anytime soon and walked out.
Walked in and promptly greeted.Great coffee and atmosphere. They also have moderate alcohol selection but the focus is on coffee from around the world and you get free refills on the coffee....
