The Black Cat Diner: A Salem Gem Worth a 6.5 Hour Drive (and More!) After a grueling 6.5 hour drive to Salem for a concert, my husband, sister, sister-in-law, and I were ravenous. We stumbled upon the Black Cat Diner, and let me tell you, it was the best kind of serendipitous find. Forget the concert – this diner became the highlight of our trip! We opted to sit at the bar, and it was the perfect decision. We were treated to a front-row seat to the culinary magic unfolding. The owner, with a passionate and focused demeanor, was personally cooking everything fresh, right before our eyes. The aroma of sizzling ingredients and the rhythmic clanging of pans created an irresistible, authentic diner atmosphere. The food? Absolutely phenomenal. Every dish was clearly made with care and quality ingredients. You could taste the freshness in every bite. It was classic diner fare elevated to a level we rarely experience. We were all impressed by the sheer deliciousness and the generous portions. Beyond the food, the service was exceptional. Our waitress was warm, welcoming, and genuinely friendly. She made us feel right at home, even though we were clearly out-of-towners. The combination of the owner's dedication and the waitress's genuine hospitality created a truly special dining experience. The Black Cat Diner isn't just a place to grab a quick bite; it's a place where you can witness the passion and skill that goes into making good, honest food. It's a testament to the charm and authenticity that makes Salem so special. If you're in Salem, whether you're a local or a visitor, do yourself a favor and stop by the Black Cat Diner. You'll leave with a full stomach, a happy heart, and a newfound appreciation for the simple joy of a truly great diner experience. We're already planning our next trip to Salem, and the Black Cat Diner is definitely at the top of our itinerary. Highly, highly recommended!

I just visited this place with my wife and I can’t say enough about the incredible experience!!! From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed with warm smiles and exceptional service. The girls were extremely attentive, friendly, and genuinely seemed to care about making our meal special and delicious. The food was absolutely outstanding—each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. You could tell the ingredients were fresh and thoughtfully prepared in front of you. Every bite was delicious. The atmosphere was the perfect blend of cozy and vibrant, making it ideal for a casual brunch. The ambiance was enhanced by tasteful decor taking me to the authenticity of an American dinning that we see in the Hollywood movies, creating a great vibe for a memorable morning. As a matter of facts this hidden gem was in the movie Hubie Halloween featuring Adam Sandler. Which makes it a better experience. I highly recommend this hidden “hole in the wall” gen to anyone looking for a fantastic brunch experience. It’s a place that checks all the boxes: amazing service, delicious food, a welcoming atmosphere, and owned and operated by an amazing and inspiring young woman. I’ll definitely be back again!!!

The vibes here are everything! We arrived on a hot hot Thursday afternoon while they were slow but that just meant more time to mingle with the staff and the regulars. Jen and Day were so accommodating, helpful, funny and kind. We truly felt so welcomed, like we had been coming here for years! There is some real charm in this old train car from the hand written menus to the dry erase board of specials to the way you can see everything going on while your food is prepared with Selena playing on the radio. I just loved this place so much. The food delivers and absolutely ups the whole experience. It’s just so dang good! Bonus! Plenty of hot sauce to go around! The space was clean and well cared for and the food options could satisfy any desire for breakfast and lunch! As a black cat owner myself, I had so much love for the decor and atmosphere. They do have their own lot in back for parking, just be mindful of where you park! Casual conversation aplenty, delicious food and good vibes all around, I will think of this place fondly for years to come! 🐈‍⬛

Didn’t even get to try the food. After waiting in line for a bit we were offered stools at the breakfast bar. Normally, I’m cool with that. This is a smaller establishment but it looks like a cool spot. I get it’s popular and I get that it’s not a large restaurant. I have no complaints of that. My issue was when we saw our spots at the bar, we also noticed a table right at the end of the place for 2 people. My significant other asked if we could take that spot and we were told “there is a line”. We understand that as we also waited in that line. However we were just brought into the place and no one else came in behind us. So we said we understood but asked if we could just take the booth and maybe two other people could take the stools. We were told “there was a line.” Again, we totally understood that as not only could we see the line but we too experienced standing in said line. So we said again, we understood and we just clarified if it was possible to sit at the table (which hadn’t been wiped yet so it wasn’t like someone was just about to sit) and just asked if we could wait for it and someone else could sit at the bar. We were then told once you sit, you can’t switch seats. Not from Salem, totally understand it’s busy and I know I’m not the only person and the world doesn’t revolve around me but that is a crazy policy if it is one. Never heard of that in my years of dining out. So we decided to leave instead. Food looked good but wasn’t super thrilled about the service. The lack of care or willingness to help was off putting. Maybe it was posted that once you sit you can’t move but I didn’t see the sign. We would have been fine waiting a little longer or finding another solution but that answer and the way it was said just made it seem like because it’s a tourist destination we just didn’t matter and no one cared to even put effort...
