Didn't like the burnt ends and the brisket. The sauces used to cook then top the meats are sweet upon sweet. Coleslaw sauce, sweet. Sweet potato fries. Obviously, sweet.
I picked a bunch of stuff that were just sweet. I'm down for sweet, but it was overkill.
I asked the order taker if I could try the ribs and the chicken instead of the burn ends and the brisket.
The order taker seemed a bit annoyed by my request but the other person she called over seemingly the owner or cook, happily made the switch.
Within seconds I had the ribs and the chicken. The ribs were excellent and the chicken was excellent.
No extra sauce seemed like it was needed for any of those for meets that I tried.
I wouldn't try this place again but I think that they did a good job for what it was worth. They swapped out the meats.
The ribs and chicken that I did have made up for the lack luster brisket and burnt ends.
This BBQ must be the flavors that attract the locals in town. But I've traveled the country and had better flavor profiles and barbecue from other places with the same price point or cheaper.
The ambience is small town. And quaint. Not necessarily clean, in my opinion, but decent.
I guess I like a little more flavor from my barbecue; some spices, some smokiness some, savory flavors, and some sweetness. But what I got and what I chose as far as sides was just sweet upon sweet upon sweet, and that didn't satisfy my barbecue craving.
Still, I think they do a decent job and did right by me by switching out the meats with...
Read moreStopped in on our way to Nebraska to visit family. We were pleasantly surprised by this quiant little BBQ joint. I ordered the rib basket with sweet potato fries, hubby ordered burnt ends basket with sweet potato fries, and my son ordered pulled pork sandwich with french fries.
The service was friendly, helpful, and prompt. The food came out very quickly and was presented in a lined basket. The prices were very reasonable, and portions were generous. My food smelled so good, but tasted even better! The ribs were delicious, tender, and juicy. You could taste the real meat flavor - not just the smoke. They were so meaty, I almost couldn't eat the whole serving! The sweet potatoes fries were cooked just right - tender inside, crisp outside. Even the toast was delicious, and I don't usually bother with the bread. Both my hubby and my son enjoyed their meals as well.
My ONLY "complaint", if you can call it that, would be the decor. They have a bit of identity crisis going on. Pics line the walls that cover subjects from the appropriate historical "vintage" pictures and pics of old trucks, to panoramic landscapes, ocean, Italy, Paris, and a large collection of Hollywood stars. One that I did think was cool was a pic of Charlie Daniels, signed and addressed c to Hickory Hut. It doesn't surprise me that celebs would like this place. It's a hidden gem! If you get the chance, I highly recommend a stop at the...
Read moreThis place was really good. I had never heard of it before and decided to give it a try because well I'm on a road trip and that's what you do try new places and things. The restaurant is really visually interesting with almost every inch of their walls covered with photos or some type of art. I had the Burnt Ends sandwich basket and it was good. The sauce was sweeter than I'm used to but it was really good and that's the beauty of trying new places you get to discover that you like certain things. As we were leaving three female police officers showed up in different vehicles so they must have met up intentionally for dinner and since cops know the good places to eat I guess I really did pick a good spot to eat. As the three of them were walking in I made a joke that they all looked very arresting and they actually laughed. Coming from a large city where the cops are all stern faced it's was nice to experience police officers who are not afraid to let their human sides shine through. I even bought t-shirt so I could remember the place. One last thing, if the restaurant management reads this, the men's bathroom was clean like really clean and when you are on a long road trip you have no idea how important it is to have clean place to take a nature break. Thank you to your employees for making the Hickory Hut a tasty and comfortable...
