Big Lou's Pizza — Restaurant in San Antonio

I'm sorry to say this, but the pizza is pretty bad.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, not everything is bad actually. Food wise, the wings and cheese bread were very good, and the salad was also pretty good. But I think we all go to this establishment with a particular type of food in mind and it is absolutely not worth the novelty unless you're feeding people with very low standards.

I'm going to start from the beginning with this review, and I want to mention that I've been to this location more than once. So when you approach the restaurant you will be inundated with signs both on printer paper and some handwritten, with a myriad of rules about the establishment. The first one you will notice is that you are not allowed to enter through the front door if you are dining inside. The next rule is that you must stand on a certain side of the hallway while you wait to be seated. There are numerous other rules that are posted all over the walls, they charge for water, they will not split a check, etc. The next thing you'll notice when you walk in is that this place has the exact same smell as a skating rink. If you've ever been to a skating rink then you know exactly what I mean and exactly what is causing that smell so it's kind of off-putting. You can also expect the level of professionalism and cleanliness that most skating rings have. That said, the staff has always been very polite and courteous, I don't believe for a moment that the wait staff are the ones creating all of the signage or the rules themselves. On to the food, as I mentioned they do have some food that is very good. I would absolutely recommend the wings, their garlic cheesy bread is very tasty although the marinara sauce is served cold from the fridge which is a little odd. The drinks are big and they're served in cups with lids so you can take it with you when you leave, that's kind of nice because you probably will not get the opportunity to ask for a refill very often since they keep this place staffed at the bare minimum. Okay, let's talk about the Giant pizza. I came with a group on my second visit and we ordered the second to largest pizza, half and half, one cheese and one supreme. This was the worst Supreme Pizza I have ever had in my life! And I am including pizzas that come from the freezer, pizzas that are $1 from the freezer at Walmart, cafeteria pizzas, and pizzas that have been sitting in my fridge for more than one day. This was absolutely, and I can't stress this enough, inedibly disgusting.

I'm going to try and break down what was not working with the supreme pizza. First of all with a large pizza it's probably impossible to get your crust appropriately crusty all the way through, so the actual outer crust was fine but as you went into the middle of the slice it was basically dough. It was probably cooked enough to eat, but I don't think people want to eat a doughy slice of anything. The next issue is that there weren't very many toppings beyond the sauce and cheese, I saw some Canadian bacon slices, and I saw a couple black olives, and I think there may have been some sausage balls on there, but the big issue here was the egregious use of green olives. I know what a supreme pizza is, it has black olives, a green olive belongs in a martini and not a pizza, but I would completely forgive Big Lou's establishment of this overuse of green olives if I could actually pick them off of my pizza. I'm not exaggerating, it tasted like they poured the juice of the green olives from the jar over the pizza. If you can imagine chugging the liquid from a jar of green olives then you can imagine what biting into this pizza was like. So that is my review, the people I work with absolutely love this place, I think it has a cult like following and perhaps dining here harkens back to earlier times for them. But for me, I will never order the pizza from this...

We went there a week ago after not having been there in a few years. There was 3 of us, one had a salad, one had a pizza and one had a calzone. The food quality was really good and the food was definitely fresh and hot. Unfortunately, the service was sub par overall. I am not sure when they changed the seating process, but before, you used to be able to order at the cash register as soon as you went in, and they would seat you down and bring you the food. It seemed very good and efficient. Unfortunately, that process has changed and it is much slower. We were there on a Saturday and it was maybe 50% full at the most. We waited for 15 minutes just be seated. Then once we sat down, we waited another 5-10 minutes before our waitress and took our orders. Then we waited about 30 minutes and they brought out the salad. The person eating the salad finished about 10 minutes after getting it and then the other 2 finally got their pizza and calzone. We did not see the waitress until another 10 minutes after we ate to get us the check. It was a little disappointing because the food was so good, but those wait times really brought our moods down. From what I could tell, our waitress was working maybe 3 other tables? No fault of hers, I think the place is just short staffed. Also, one thing that I did not care for is that they ask for your ID when paying with a credit card, that part was fine I understand they need to check. But she actually had to take it with her along with the credit card to the back. That was weird, not sure why they need to do that, they can simply verify the name right there and give it back to the customer. I also wish they would change they do the ordering, and go back to the way it was, where you walk in, order, be seated, and then your food is brought out to you. Again, the food was really good, just sad that the service was...
