A bit disappointed in the service. It's still new to this area of San Antonio but they needed to hire or give more training to their wait staff. We received one plate of the main dish with nothing else on the plate. Had to wait for my salad which should have been the first item brought to the table. Then had to ask twice for my mashed potatoes. Finally had my order complete. Oh, and also had to ask for silverware and napkins! We were never asked about drink refills either. The food was very good except my steak was cold by the time the potatoes arrived. Luckily the potatoes were very hot and I mixed them with my steak to warm it up!! Anyway, hopefully this will all get better with time. Wait another month before trying them out at the Hwy 151 location. The carpet coming out of the kitchen was already filthy too. Makes me wonder what the kitchen floor looks like..... Well I went back to Black Bear for breakfast and give them another try. I got the chicken fried steak breakfast with 2 eggs and a biscuit and I choose fruit for my second side. I included a picture of it all. First to talk about the service it was much better than the first time!! The waitress was older and knew what she was doing. But.... I felt like a "third wheel" when ordering or asking her for anything. My friend and her were of the same race and the waitress was very kind and talkative to her. Never looked at me when explaining the menu. Didn't come to refill my drink or even ask if I wanted a refill when she asked my friend!!! Talk about being slided because of race!! (No, I am not of African decent so don't think this is about that.) Anyway, now the food. The steak was a pressed meat patty. I expected real beef. The eggs were delicious! The biscuit was great and huge!! The fruit was terrible! Not a all sweet are ripe. Fruit is horrible these days no matter where you go. I don't know what these flowers are doing to our fruit!! It's horrible! I'm going to try farmers .markets now and hopefully they are grown without whatever these huge commercial growers are doing. Well, I really don't think I'll be going back to Black Bears any time soon. I have been to the one on Military Drive and the food and service there was Sooo good! Maybe if I get the desire I may go there again some day. Came back today to try for the second time. Much better experience today!! I had the meatloaf and mashed potatoes, with brown gravy & green beans. All were very good! I'd never had meatloaf with grated carrots but they made it a lil sweet and good! The brown gravy looks so dark it seems like it chocolate syrup when it comes out!! 🤣 Tasted great though!! Our server was very good, professional and courteous!!! Yes, ma'am and no Sir all the time when addressing us!! We appreciated that very much!! Good job in getting your stuff together Black Bear on Hwy 151!!! The only negatives are the floors still very dirty from lazy dirty customers. 😢 Lots of paper straw pkgs and napkins all over. They need to sweep more often. The plate I had would be perfect if it offered bread or biscuits.

Second time at this Black Bear Diner..& our last visit! We have eaten at other Black Bears & they were very good. Could not remember exactly why we thought this one was bad before we had gone yesterday, but we were reminded as soon as our food got to the table. I had a free Black Bear breakfast & that's what I ordered. I asked for onions in my scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, & the side was biscuits & gravy. My husband ordered a breakfast sandwich which was to have bacon & ham with breakfast potatoes & a side of grits. His sandwich came with no bacon & my eggs had no onions. He sent his back but the waiter brought his sandwh8ch back with a side of bacon on a different plate. I chose not to send my eggs back because I did that last time & got tossed on top. No thank you! My husband asked me to try one of the potatoes. They were NOT even done. They were still semi hard & had NO flavor. Then the biscuits & gravy, the biscuits inside were a lil undercooked & the gravy was lumpy & it was nit hecause there was sausage but it was not completely mixed up. Not sure who the kitchen mgr is but they need to be DEMOTED!!! (The receipt clearly read add onions & crispy bacon) Also, we had to stop the waiter to ask for a refill & he only had 3 tables, including ours. It was not husy yet. I have added a pic of our plates when they first came out & I took a pic of our plates as we got up to leave. As I mentioned I had a FREE breakfast that I ordered exactly with water. We paid at the cashier & after she took off my "free breakfast" (not completely free) we paid a little over $22 for ONE breakfast that we didn't even eat!!! Absolutely the worse!!!

After my first visit I can say I really love this place. We went for a Sunday brunch so we had to wait. The host said it would be about an hour and a half but we didn’t mind because we lived right around the corner and went home. Not even twenty minutes later we got a notification that our table was ready. We luckily snagged parking in the paved lot but if you find the parking a little sparse, there is a dirt lot you can turn into for the time being. Our server, Dedra, was nothing but amazing. She knows her clientele and she didn’t hesitate to give me some sass that only an auntie could give which I APPRECIATED so much. My wife and I felt right at home with her and I’d come back just to see her again. She’s definitely my favorite, hands down. The food came out after a short wait, faster than I was expecting. The portions were large and the food was delicious. I got The Grizz and my wife got The Original Scambowl, both amazing choices on her and my end. To wash it all down we had REAL sweet tea to drink. It puts a lot of people here in an uproar but I haven’t had good sweet tea since I moved to Texas. I usually get a water but my wife convinced me to try hers and I was hooked. This place knows what they’re doing. To top it all off, our total came out to only $30 after a discount. Even before the discount I was blown away by the fact we got all that food for so cheap. This is going to be a definite place that we will come back to time and time again for the rest of our time here.

Hello again This is a restaurant review from yours truly The black bears restaurant on 151 completely sucks their food is not done I was told there by the manager that everything comes frozen and preheat it I've eaten at the one by the pilot in San Antonio and that woman told me the only thing that comes frozen is the meatloaf do not eat it because it's disgusting Will tonight at the Black bears restaurant at the 151 everything was disgusting I was so appalled because it was my sister's birthday dinner I felt so terrible because I had been telling everybody black bears black bears black bears their number one and I tell you what the biscuit was rock hard I can knock on it I showed the manager that the chicken fried steak was completely white on the inside the steak that we had was red The shrimps were mushy The ribs were pink on the inside The breakfast platter that my brother-in-law got the sausage was completely raw on the inside This was a total travesty The manager walked away from us as if she was not going to help us with anything I found that very rude but the young lady who was our waitress she was amazing She made sure that we were taken care of and we gave her a $20 tip wish we had more because we would have given it to her We also got two apple pies They were out of my blackberry pie so I stuck to the apple again I've eaten at black bears in California Arizona Kansas and also by the pilot in San Antonio and I've always been satisfied 151 was a total disaster none of the food was seasoned none of the food was done It was disgusting and then the apple pie was like it was made for somebody with diabetes now come on guys You know that those pies are supposed to be made for our guilty pleasure You failed It was a travesty and then my sister's birthday dinner was ruined I can't believe it especially after I complimented on you guys so much and I was so happy that your restaurant opened up around the corner for me I couldn't wait to get there and here we go and it was ruined manager lady you sucked I'm sorry I don't talk about people like that but you walking away from us as if nothing was wrong you sucked little waitress lady you were amazing bottom line you are number one in my book as far as customer service goes. The steak and shrimp platter it bombed the chicken fried steak platter it bombed the breakfast platter with the ham sausage and bacon it bombed The rib platter it bombed and those loaded baked potatoes You can tell they've been sitting in the oven in tin foil for four or 5 hours They were so dry I don't care how much butter and sour cream you put on that You're not going to be able to chew and swallow it ,it was like rubber I'm sorry The biscuits you can knock on them The only thing that was good the cornbread muffins and then not to mention the lemonade they used strawberry syrup instead of pureed strawberries. And the apple pie I had to come home and doctor that up with a little cinnamon and sugar and butter and my guilty pleasure was ready but I have to tell you those apples on the inside were not done I don't understand what it is they're not cooking their food completely they're not making sure things are done something's wrong back there I think somebody from one of these good restaurants that are black bear owners or whatever you want to call them black bear workers They need to come on in and show them how it's done thanks for ruining my sister's birthday by the way adios never again I don't not suggest black bears on 151 if you want a good meal go to the one by the pilot on...

The restaurant overall was nice. Parking was very bad. Not enough parking. Had to park at the construction site next door. The entrance waiting area was bad, though. No A/C at all in that small area when it was over 100° outside, but I waited outside anyway because at least there was a nice breeze blowing luckily. They should have propped the door open to at least get some ventilation moving thru, seeing how it was so crowded. And one of the front doors was locked. So everyone was coming in & out in the same door. Waited about 30 minutes for a table, but only because it was opening week. Didn't mind that & was expected. Service was ok. The waiter must have been new because he looked very young and didn't really know the menu. He wouldn't add certain items to our order. We ordered an omlette and wanted to add mushrooms to it. He said they can't add items to it. We even said we'll pay for it. Still would not do it. We placed our order and was specific. He even repeated it back to us. Well, when we got our order, one of the plates we ordered was wrong. The plate we ordered with the omlette we specifically asked for egg whites, & it wasn't. It took us about 10 minutes to find him, and at that time, the manager walked by, I stopped her and explained the situation. She right away apologized and put in the correct order. And said she would take care of it on the bill. At that time, the waiter showed up, and she explained what was going on and to comp that plate. Also, I specifically ordered unsweetened tea due to being diabetic. He brought me sweet tea. We finally got all the correct items and ate our breakfast. The food was very good, nicely presented. Very tasty. Loved the way the menu is played out. Like an old style newspaper. There are so many items to choose from. One thing I noticed they didn't serve was wings, lol. It was strange for me because mostly all restaurant now a days serve wings at least as an appetizer. Lol. Anyway, we proceeded to pay for our meal and noticed he didn't take off that plate he got wrong. We had to call the manager again, and she took off that plate. I wasn't really upset about the mistakes, I chalk it up to new restaurant, new staff & a holiday. It was very busy being on a holiday, July 4th. Overall, it was a nice place. I enjoyed the food & atmosphere. Other staff members were very courteous & professional. I would definitely go back because i would like to try other items on their menu. Would like to thank the manager that was there at that time. Forgot to get her...
