Stayed at this Hampton Inn from December 11 to December 16, 2019.
Rooms were clean and very well kept. The staff were accommodating and friendly from the room cleaners to the management (everyone in between), and I hope some of them would be good enough to keep in touch if they're flying out to Hawai'i sometime in the future.
From check-in, Brittany made sure I knew everything I needed to know from the first evening. Wi-Fi, room amenities, complimentary breakfast start and finish time, pool and gym access, and basically what to expect at all times. The entire crew that I interacted with was excellent, and the evening desk and maintenance people endured my long-winded conversations and stories about Hawai'i when they weren't busy and provided me with excellent info and shared stories of their own in the long evening hours since I was kind of awake because I was still on Hawai'i Time.
Taylor and Austin were fun to chat with and make conversation over questions I had about the hotel and the area, as well as when I made suggestions on their midnight snack selections (especially the Cup-o-Noodles Ramen choices). It was fun sharing what we sometimes do in Hawai'i with them when it comes to creativity and instant ramen.
Jacob was always helpful and had many useful suggestions on my stay, including advising me to make sure I got my base pass as early as possible because there were days that the Visitor's Center on Lackland would be super busy and might take awhile to issue my pass, even if I was vouched for and cleared.
Misty and I spent a few hours conversing during a slower period about both the local culture and how things are in San Antonio, and she was also really patient with me sharing things about Hawai'i and places to see. I also shared some of the Hawai'i foods to make sure to have while there, along with a few places I felt she'd love to see since she seemed to really want to visit the islands some day.
Andrea and I also spent an hour or two sharing thoughts and ideas on San Antonio and Hawai'i. She was both helpful in advising me on some ideas I had for planning out my final full day, and helping me to consider what I might want to bring back with me from San Antonio to Hawai'i. I really hope she also might have a chance to check out the islands with her family one day and that I'd be able to play tour guide for them at least for a little while.
One unfortunate incident that occurred while I was there was one of the room cleaners, Abigail, had her personal belongings stolen by someone pretending to check in as guests. It was fortunate that the thieves tried to do the same thing at another hotel down the road, and some people who were at the other hotel (which was out of rooms) had come to this one while the police were present and getting info from hotel management and Abigail, and when they overheard the description of the culprits, they immediately shared info and all of the group carrying out the heist were apprehended (it was so great to see good people sharing info and resources to make sure those hurting others were caught and dealt with). The only unfortunate thing was Abi losing access to several things including her wallet (and cards inside) and phone because they were evidence in the investigation and case being brought against the people. The hotel staff rallied around her and several people offered to help her out until the entire case was settled and hopefully, she'd get her things back. I advised them to tell her to cancel all her cards and see if she could get new info issued so that she could go on with her life despite police needing to hold on to her things.
After a few days with this hotel's staff, I truly felt a welcome and sense of friendship, so I tried to make sure they all felt my appreciation for them and I got sandwiches on one day, tacos on the next, and on my final full day, I ran around getting some Filipino food together for them.
I'd stay here again in a heartbeat if...
Read moreThis hotel is a mix bag... but mostly a bad mix. Hampton Inns have a reliably comfortable bed, and this one did too...so we slept well. And, it was close to the AFB.
However, this was NOT an ideal room. The outlets in the room itself (not including the bathroom) were unreliable or UNSAFE. The electrical outlets at the desk and bedside table wouldn't hold two prong plugs, they'd fall out. The outlet on the wall under the thermostat sparked so badly (both sockets) that it is clear it is unsafe to use and a fire hazard.
The next issue is the door to the bathroom. It squeaked so loudly when rolling it open or closed that it woke people up...probably in the adjoining rooms too. It was so loud it became a joke.
The television was also a pain, the remote didn't work....and it's not a smart tv at all. Who doesn't have that now so people can watch their own stuff, and their internet was so SLOW.
And no one ever emptied our trash... the entire 3 night stay.
The breakfast the night we checked out was pretty good, but being as I imagine so much of their business comes from people staying there for BMT graduation....they need to offer something much much earlier on Wednesday & Thursday. People are told to get to the base at 5 am.
Which also reminds me. Their selection of snacks/drinks needs upgrading too....there's just not much to it. We stayed at one in Athens GA recently that offered frozen treats like ice cream, wine, beer, fruit, etc.
Also, beware if you have little ones. Don't go eat at Bombshells, it's like a Hooters....only their butt's aren't covered. We didn't know that when we tried it....and it was BAD! Both in food and service... our check was comped. But there is a Main Event right by the hotel that could be fun.
So, it's not a bad stay... but definitely not the...
Read moreThe Hampton Inn and Suites at Lackland in San Antonio provides the standard amenities expected from such an establishment, with competent staff and the usual breakfast offerings. However, the hotel falls significantly short in ensuring guest security, particularly regarding vehicle safety in the parking lot. Despite frequent incidents of vehicle break-ins, the hotel's response has been minimal and largely ineffective. During my stay, multiple vehicles, including my daughter's truck, were tampered with, showcasing a recurring issue.||||The management has implemented some security measures such as surveillance cameras and the recent addition of a night watchman. Yet, these steps have proven insufficient—staff themselves acknowledge that the single watchman can be easily circumvented by perpetrators who simply wait for him to move to the opposite side of the building. Adding additional guards to cover all areas continuously could significantly improve the situation. ||||Moreover, vehicle break-ins occur so frequently that the local police often handle reports over the phone, rarely visiting the scene. This lack of police presence only underscores the critical need for the hotel to take more robust security measures, such as fencing the entire property—a significant deterrent that has been overlooked despite ongoing problems reported over the last four years.||||While the hotel blames the local crime rate, it is clear that proactive steps are needed to protect both guests and their properties. As it stands, without serious changes to their security approach, the Hampton Inn and Suites at Lackland makes itself and its guests a soft target in a city already...
