IHOP — Restaurant in San Antonio

My family and I were departing San Antonio to head home on 28 Mar 2025 and prior to driving to the airport, we required some much-needed sustenance. We couldn't decide on what to try since there were so many options in that city, but we opted for IHOP because it's sort of like an "ol' reliable" breakfast spot for us...not to mention, my daughter had some free pancakes coming to her via the IHOP app.

Surprisingly, the IHOP franchise seems to get a lot of negative reviews/ratings no matter what city you're in (including my home city of Las Vegas)...seems to average anywhere between 3.2 stars to 3.8 stars, so I was pleased to find one that was 4.2 stars. Normally, I take certain negative reviews with a grain of salt because a lot of people complain about trivial things or on things/events that are out of a businesses' control (i.e., cost of goods). I myself enjoy supporting small businesses more than franchises; however, it doesn't mean I won't support larger companies either. Also, people tend to over exaggerate their ratings because of one little thing (e.g., I didn't get enough bacon...one star; an employee didn't smile at me...one star; my server forgot my fork...one star; cost of my omelette should be $16 and not $18...one star...even though they'd probably use that extra $2 on something that isn't tangible, etc.), but I digress.

During this visit, we ordered the Chicken Fajita Omelette w/Short Stack Original Buttermilk Pancakes, Veggie Egg White Omelette w/Hash Browns, Full Stack Original Buttermilk Pancakes, Big Breakfast Burrito w/Hash Browns, side of (4) Bacon, coffee, and orange juice (not pictured). Everything tasted good and I even cleaned my plate; however, due to the amount of food on our table, not everything was wiped clean. I was surprised that the bacon was crispy and had a good flavor because I have been to other IHOPs and miscellaneous businesses where the bacon was less than adequate.

The service was impressive, mainly due to our main server, David G. He was attentive, very personable and friendly; and highly efficient. I will openly admit that I have been to other IHOPs where the server acts like they don't want to be there...but this was not the case with him. The restaurant was clean but I would recommend to the owner/manager to think about placing some of those walk strips (for grip) in the restaurant because the floor was slippery - mainly on the walkway towards the restrooms, or at least post a sign because I can only imagine someone slipping and hurting themselves one day.

Overall, I enjoyed my visit to this IHOP. Are there other restaurants better than this? Absolutely. But this isn't a compare and contrast time and my review/rating reflects solely on this IHOP location and my experience here. I always appreciate this franchise for their continued support to the men and women of the Armed Forces, including its Veterans. The prices are reasonable here and I highly recommend this place to everyone. Note: I hope this IHOP will one day provide Tapatio hot sauce. Perhaps I should rate this restaurant one star because they only had Cholula...

On Jan 19, 2024 I went around 12am. Our waiter was a short guy with glasses. First of all he gave us attitude from the moment he got to wait on us. I only ordered hot chocolate because I wanted to warm up. I understand having a bad day, but the way he was treating us was horrible. First he came back with chocolate milk. To tell you i was confused was an understatement, I looked around to my friend and she also was confused. She said we wanted hot chocolate and he said "hey I asked if you guys wanted chocolate milk and you guys said yes." Which didn't make sense because I had pointed at the menu and said hot chocolate please. He started to kinda argue with us when we didn't even talk back to him. There was an awkward silence between me and my friends. He then changed his tone and said "i CAN get you hot chocolate but I need to take back the chocolate milk because you will be charged for it." Which I get but I honestly didn't ask for anything else because I felt intimidated and I just wanted to leave as fast as I could. Our biggest fear was that he would try to put something in our drink just because we had sent back the drinks we hadn't ordered. We would've ordered more if we didn't feel scared and watched. He was very fast to get our checks ready but when it came to him processing our cards it took him a very long time for some reason and we were confused as to why. He came back and gave us a completely different attitude. He turned his tone friendly and said "you guys stay safe, and warm." It was like he was a completely different person. As if he hadn't spent the whole time giving us attitude and basically rushing us to leave. Mind you it was 12am and there wasn't really anyone else besides 2 tables that I saw...

I had an absolutely fantastic experience at IHOP thanks to the outstanding service provided by Allstate! Not only did he go above and beyond the call of duty, but he handled a challenging situation

During my visit, there was a bit of a hiccup when the cook threatened to leave before even starting our food. Allstate, with his remarkable dedication to ensuring a great dining experience, intervened and even tho he was upset he managed to resolve the issue swiftly by getting the cook to understand he had a job to do and could not leave the line true he could have been a little more professional about the issue but he said we were his family so i understand why he was angry because he really passionate I was genuinely impressed by his commitment to upholding high standards of service.

Despite the tension, Allstate remained composed in front of us and he was sincerely apologetic about the incident. His genuine concern for our satisfaction truly made a difference and turned what could have been a negative experience into a memorable one. It's clear that he takes pride in his work and genuinely cares about his customers.

I'm grateful to have had Allstate as our server and commend his professionalism and dedication to delivering exceptional service. I'll definitely be returning to IHOP and highly recommend it to anyone looking for not only delicious food but also outstanding customer care.
