I liked the shrimp quesadillas more than my wife did. I appreciated the larger chunks of shrimp (versus those rollie pollie, bug sized, popcorn crustaceans that are sometimes used in shrimp and cheese dishes) though they were not of Texas gulf origin (Bummer! They would really have been good.). The fresh avocado and sour cream was a nice touch along with the melty oaxaca cheese and crisp flour tortilla. After a Spanglish conversation with the waitress we ended up with beef enchiladas that were dusted with cheese (more please) and moistened with carne guisada gravy. I don't care whose mama did what to whose enchiladas when they were growing up, but these were some gooderns! The chicken puffies elicited more than just a gioconda smile with their Mona Lisa level of artful presentation of shape, style, and form. The taste . . . a number of superlatives come to mind but.let's just say that without side by side comparison it is getting harder and harder to make a definitive "best" statement considering the number of winners I have sampled. When it came to paying the bill I quietly posed the question as to whether La Barca took credit cards to my wife. To my surprise, a large, solitary fellow sitting at a table some 6 feet away answered "Yes. They do". I thanked him and began to wonder about the acoustics of this place even with the cumbia playing lowly in the background. I saw that this same gentleman was eating fideo and purposefully verbalized a question again in a low tone to my wife as to whether the fideo loco might be good here just to further test the man 's seemingly bionic hearing. Sure enough he chimed in that he was very picky about his fideo and that it was good here. Glad not to have audibilized my social security number or revealed my identity as an undercover agent for the NSA, we paid at the counter and muffled our laughter as we made for the door. Actually we enjoyed the food, the honest, friendly people and the feeling that we had just had lunch at a neighborhood place where no one was truly a stranger and everyone was glad you...
Read moreSomething about this place's appetizer crunchy tortillas makes it stand out among all the ones I've tasted thus far. The dip was regular but the tortillas had an amazing flavor.
I ordered Huevos Rancheros as I'm on a streak to taste as many unique Huevis Rancheros from different Mexican restaurants. What I had was just ordinary and nothing outstanding. I'll probably have it some place else. But I'll come back here to try out lunch and dinner.
Corn tortillas were served fresh and hot.
The place is casual with just ordinary ambience with music. It's not huge but presentable and hospitable. Place was packed for brunch....
Read moreGood food, good seasoning, good service! We got the steak ranchero and the carne a la mexicana and both came with beans, rice and salad. The beans were soooo bomb! They tasted like they were made with lard which are my fave. The green salsa also had good flavor, although not spicy. The tortillas were homemade which is also a plus for me! They were all really nice as well, checking often to see if we were good. My only small complaint is that I wish they had more agua frescas flavors— they only had lemonade and it was sold out when we got there (around 12:40pm on a Sat). If we are ever in this area again, we will make...
