I’m from an area where Mexican dishes are our comfort food and when you are craving those foods, you want them to taste like HOME. I had the pleasure of stopping by Los Tacos Gueros and enjoying their food.
As you enter the restaurant, you are greeted by Bernardo, who by the way will make your day. He greets you with such enthusiasm and character that will leave an ever lasting impression on you. He is that uncle that your family loves, who jokes around and keeps up with your needs as a guest at his home.
As I approached the counter, he could tell it was my first time there and said, “I know what you want and I know you’ll be back!”
As they say in Mexico, “¡Dicho y Hecho!” “Said and Done!” I was served a La Costra taco which is filled with Choice Beef Fajitas, cheese crisp to perfection in a flour tortilla topped with avocado and bacon. All the flavors combined is one of the best tasting tacos I’ve ever had.
After finishing this taco, I devoured the Trash Can Taco. Don’t be spooked by the name! This taco contains some awesome Carne Guisada with perfectly balanced flavors in addition to the egg, beans, cheese, AND BACON!
LIFE PRO TIP: If you’re into spicy salsas, try the red one!
If you’re looking for a delicious Mexican food spot, THIS IS IT. THIS IS THE REAL DEAL.
I’ll be back to try the Menudo and the Jamaica juice tomorrow.
BONUS: Try the refreshing...
Read more6 stars if I could. Easily among the best of ALL restaurants I have patronized. La Costra taco is their best (voted best in city).
We started with a side of Carne guisada, la costra plate, substitute charro beans, Pantera taco, and trash can taco. Tried all six salsas. The la costra is magnificent, and is made slightly even better with the addition of a mild salsa (red of tamatillo) and lime squeeze; in the end I preferred it straight, but you must try both ways. I had a substitution of charro beans, and they were incredible. Looks watery but the juice is identical flavor go the beans themselves. After finishing the la costra plate together, my wife destroyed the pantera taco before I could try a bite. My trash can taco was delicious but oddly did not feel filling. I'd probably get the guerkos taco next time instead of trash can, even though trash can is much more popular (only difference is trash can includes eggs and bean).
We also got two drinks. I went for the mango, not even knowing that it's fresh-made in-house. OMG, it tasted like I was back in Miami (Hialeah) and taking a big bite out of a ripe mango right off of the tree! My wife chose the horchata, which was also good and caused less overfilling/bloating feeling than most places' horcharas.
This was absolutely worth the 25-minutes one-way drive!!! Sir, I will...
Read moreNot impressed. My wife and I met a friend for brunch after reading about it on some email distribution list I recently became a part of...still not sure how that happened though. In any case, I have to sum it up in the old phrase, "Don't believe everything you read." After ordering huevos rancheros, a migas plate, enchiladas, and they're infamous "trash can taco" I have to say, none of us were impressed. They packaged our food as take-out and then offered to bring me plates after I clearly said were were dining in; not to mention that we were sitting comfortably in the patio area.
In short, the food is over priced, bland; almost no flavor, and the combinations are odd. My to go box had two spoonfuls of rice and beans...not kidding. Sorry, I also don't think the trash can taco is very palatable either. Yes, I realize everyone is different so it just might be your thing. As for me, I won't be going back. I'll stick to Mary's Taco's in Helotes for now. Save your money. Go elsewhere!
Oh, and don't waste your money on the churros. Go to Costco. More flavor, more value, all-round...
