My wife isn’t a huge fan of Tex-Mex, but we both agreed, this is the most “Mex” Tex-Mex we’ve ever had in a restaurant of this style! Lupe Tortilla just recently opened, so there aren’t many reviews yet, but wow, this place will have a waitlist a mile long if they continue at this rate!
The initial two hostesses weren’t the most personable, but they were quite young, still learning, and the restaurant was completely full. They must have been only 16 or 17 and were certainly doing their best, with some extra hands or additional training, they’ll be great in no time!
If your initial welcome isn’t the smoothest, as ours wasn’t, don’t fret! A third hostess, who was also quite young, sat us, and she was an absolute delight!
After being seated our waitress Alli came over, and she was phenomenal from the get go! As I said the restaurant was full and Alli constantly had a full section, including a back to back 6-8 top. She has only been there about a week, and even with still learning the very large menu at Lupe’s was so proactive in ensure we understood everything!
Lupe Tortilla makes everything to order from scratch, which means food can take a bit longer to make, but the wait was well worth it and allowed us to enjoy the complimentary chips, salsa, beans, as well as the side of queso we ordered. I will say this, as far as I’m concerned, no other restaurant has a hand on their bean dip and their salsa was to die for as well! The queso was good, but not great, though we did forget to ask for chorizo in it which I am convinced would have made it great!
I had the fajita burrito which came smothered, the asada in it was incredible! Everything is well seasoned and every bite hit just as good as the first! The onions and lettuce on the side were the perfect addition to brighten it up, creating the perfect balance!
My wife had the 1/2 lbs beef and chicken fajitas which were also to die for! The steak and chicken were perfectly seasoned and I am still trying to figure out how they kept the chicken so moist! It came with grilled onion and peppers, as well as fresh guacamole, pico de gallo, grated cheese, a side of rice and beans, and sour cream. Lest we forget the side of tortillas, wow! I don’t know who’s abuelita is back there, but these tortillas were perfection!
Our drinks were great, and if we had any room left, we would have gotten dessert, which I am sure would have been just as great as everything else. We had enough left over for lunch the next day, and were still absolutely stuffed! The quality of food and staff made the price point beyond worth it! We sat and ate without feeling rushed and had time to enjoy all of our food, a manager even checked in with us to ensure we were enjoying our time. It can get a bit noisy, but what do you expect from a restaurant with a constant full house, it was hardly a bother at all as were to distracted trying to figure out their carne asada marinade!
Side note: we arrived around 17:35 on a Thursday and were put on the wait list with an estimated 30-35 minute wait, our table was ready at exactly the 35 minute mark.
Our order: 2 Waters (complimentary) Sprite 24 oz beer, dressed Chips, salsa, beans (complimentary) Queso (appetizer) Fajita burrito (no tomato) Beef and chicken...
Read moreWe arrived on a Sunday 10/27 around 5pm. A group of 5 of us, but 3 of us got there first. Everything seemed to be going well. We received our bar drinks. My friends margarita was WAY too tart but is too nice to say anything. She specifically also asked for a spicy margarita, and it wasn’t spicy. Alright fine it happens. The rest of our table arrives. They get settled. As they ordered drinks from the bar, I also asked for more chips. Waiter (who was very young, and claimed later in our experience there that he was new) forgot our chips. Okay. Small two things that weren’t really worth making a big deal of. I get it, he’s young and new. We place our food order. My husband and I ordered the tortilla soup, NO cilantro, and the filet mignon skillet dish. When we ordered we asked how they cooked it, medium? Medium rare? The waiter’s response was “uh I don’t know, uh I just started here and I haven’t seen all the food” I scuffed and my husband just responded with a request to make it medium rare if possible and NO refried beans. It even says in our itemized receipt no refried beans. We also asked for a mix of corn and flour tortillas. Our other friends also shared a beef fajita skillet platter. Each platter was For 1. As it says on the menu. There for we should’ve gotten 2 sides of rice, we only got 1. That’s just one of many issues. There was cilantro in my soup, which is why I didn’t even finish the soup. We also didn’t get a mix of tortillas, we only got flour. And there was REFRIED BEANS instead of charro or Barracho beans. We didn’t get any side plates for the skillet. Are we just suppose to eat off the skillet? By the time a manager checked in with us , we were already more than half way done with the skillet but I still mentioned the rice. When I told them about the rice I wanted to say more but they all seemed so occupied of which table needed the most attention around us (which seemed to be our new waiters section) I wanted these issues addressed to the managers but we kept getting interrupted by conversations around us about other tables with managers and our new server. I just gave up at that point and just wanted out of there. We of eventually got the rice and the side plates.. but it was just kind of already too late and just left a really bad taste in my mouth (metaphorically) It was an extreme disappointment and our first time there. Clearly management needs to have their new waiter trained before giving him a full section. I’m a manager at a restaurant and I make sure my wait staff is fully knowledgeable about everything (the menu, splitting checks, alcoholic beverages etc) before giving them a full section. He seemed overwhelmed, forgetful and very unapologetic. Even the managers as well. Won’t be returning. I will add, the filet mignon was cooked to...
Read moreWe arrived at 5:05 and were told it would be 20-25 min wait for 2. We ordered at the bar and waited to be seated. Several other couples ahead of us had already been seated as we continued to wait patiently. At 5:48pm my husband went to check on the wait time for our table when he noticed that all several other couples had been seated and we were still waiting on top of newly arriving customers being seated. The hostess said we had not checked in with them and my husband grabbed the phone to show them the text that we had checked in. Immediately a manager said to have us seated. We were seated at a table right by the entrance, but were so hungry by this time that we just wanted to order our food.
Ana did an amazing job serving us. The problem was that after ordering and being seated we received a phone call from Lupe Tortilla’s hostess stand telling us that our table was now ready at 6:02pm. Shortly after that call, Chris the acting manager for the night, came out 3-4x calling out to all the customers waiting that they could wait at the bar and grab some drinks while waiting for their table. My husband asked Chris what his name was and what his job was there. He wanted to express to Chris what happened to us and to make sure the hostess stand was keeping up with their tables so that this didn’t happen to anyone else. He also wanted to express to Chris that we worked in the service industry and understood the importance of the service side of things. Chris immediately responded to him with, “what do you think I’m doing!!” To which we replied that we were simply trying to explain that there was a break down at the hostess station to try and help him service the incoming customers. Chris crossed his arms across his chest and said in a condescending way that is why I’m here and you hear me calling out to everyone. Very poor customer service coming from a manager. We eat here on a regular basis and you just lost a repeat customer due to your poor customer communication and...
