I had high hopes for my first visit to Maple Street Biscuit Company, but unfortunately, it turned out to be an overwhelmingly disappointing experience.
Let’s start with the positives: The peach berry lemonade was the highlight of the visit—refreshing, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. The atmosphere was also pleasant and would be great for a casual meeting or catching up with friends and family.
Now, the rest of the experience: The cleanliness of the restaurant left much to be desired. There were no napkins available at any table or station. While this might be understandable during a rush, the restaurant wasn’t particularly busy. Several staff members were present, but they seemed more focused on looking busy than actually being helpful or attentive.
I ordered the chicken and waffles, only to be informed after sitting down that the restaurant had no maple syrup—at a place literally named Maple Street Biscuit Company. To make matters worse, the walls were covered in photos and decor celebrating maple syrup, including imagery of it being tapped fresh from trees. The irony was hard to miss. The staff offered ranch dressing as a substitute, which felt more like a joke than a solution. I managed to find a nearly empty bottle of syrup on a dirty table nearby. It was cold, watery, and completely unappetizing.
My wife offered me some of her biscuits and gravy, but that didn’t help much. The biscuits were tough and rubbery—difficult to chew and nothing like the soft, fluffy texture one would expect.
The service deserves a special mention—zero stars. This isn’t to say we were ignored entirely, but rather that the attention we received felt performative, as if the staff was more concerned with impressing a nearby manager in a collared shirt than actually helping customers. My food arrived with no utensils. I asked a server for a fork and knife, and she completely ignored me. Another waiter walked up behind her and asked if I needed anything. I repeated my request, and she acknowledged it—then walked away and started greeting other tables.
Needless to say, I had to get up and get my own utensils. And to be clear, utensils aren’t in an open area like the cup lids or condiments. If they were, I would’ve had no problem grabbing them myself. I ended up having to approach a staff member behind the counter who was rolling silverware just to get what I needed.
To top it all off, my wife ordered bacon and never received it. Given the overall lack of service and basic restaurant essentials (like napkins), she didn’t even bother to follow up on it.
This was my first visit, and it will absolutely be my last. I'm scratching this place off my...
Read moreIf it weren't for the consecutive meal order errors, I wouldn't be writing this.
I started by ordering a hash bowl with no meat since I'm a vegetarian—which I ordered to-go—and two biscuits, one iced, and the other flaky from the restaurant's website . When it was delivered, my order was wrong. I contacted the restaurant and spoke on the phone with George, who was really nice and apologetic—all around excellent customer service—and he told me to come back whenever I could so he could fix the problem.and to request a refund through Doordash. After ending the call with him, I discovered another error and that I could not request the refund because the order was placed via the restaurant site so I called back and was told by a young lady that she had refunded the order and then restated that George would fix the errors. Once more, George provided me with excellent and courteous customer service when I went in this time. while I waited, he checked in with me (he gets it). I expressed to George that the refund was never posted, and it still wasn't honored despite being told by George that the meal was being comped. I let it go! I waited and waited after he left the store for my order.. I never heard my name called, so I had to ask for my it.
I'm glad I checked before I left. We got an issue here, Houston, and I'm not going to be coming back. Not for a meal, anyway. The biscuits are the sole reason I'll return; really, what could go wrong? As a vegetarian, I place another order for a hash bowl with no meat. Goat cheese, potatoes, sautéed spinach, eggs, peppers, onions, and small mushrooms are all included in the bowl.
There were hardly any potatoes. The mushrooms were barely cooked, and there were no peppers or onions. I requested for just the peppers and onions to be prepared quickly because I was frustrated that it was happening again, and I left. When I got home, I found a few crumbles of bacon.
The pride in the work equates to the quality of the dish, and it was not here, and that saddens me. About eight months ago, I was praising this location in a previous review, so this is really disappointing. It seems that I will be taking a 15 to 20-minute trip to the...
Read moreHad breakfast here Sunday morning. I wasn't expecting much based on them being a chain, but boy was I wrong!!! Not only do they have outstanding food, but their service, support staff and overall infrastructure is second to none. They easily served us and well over 100 other customers in less than an hour and EVERY item we ordered was fantastic as well as cooked per our request. Here's a brief summary of our meal:
Fresh squeezed orange juice - 5 stars delicious with ZERO pulp Other drinks - 4 stars how about some lemonade or other juice options 3 Layer Cake with fried egg (broken yolk over hard) - 5 stars hash browns were the highlight, a perfectly cook egg and a great supporting cast Extreme B & G (over easy egg) - 5 stars Finally a restaurant that can make southern red-eye gravy!!!! They are the only restaurant in the last 30 years (yes I'm old) that comes close to my Grandma's Maple Pepper Bacon - 5 stars They included iced biscuits and it was outstanding!
I would eat breakfast here every day if they weren't 30 miles away. Seriously this is by far the BEST BREAKFAST IN SAN ANTONIO PERIOD! Yes you have to stand in line to order, pickup your own food and clean your table. If that bothers you, definitely go to The Guenther House, Magnolia Cafe or some other restaurant where the food is inferior and twice the price. It was very busy considering the Grand Opening isn't unitl April 9th, but I couldn't believe how fast and efficient they were. In the same amount of time you would normally wait to even get a table (50 minutes) at Snooze across the street they served well over 100 customers. Every staff member was hard at work cranking out exceptional quality food in an incredibly short amount of time. I didn't think that Chick-fil-A could be beat when it comes to speed, efficiency and correctness, but Maple Street may have done it (if they can maintain it). Our new #1 and probably only breakfast...
