I have often heard Myron's is the best steak in San Antonio. I have heard the same about Ruth's Cris. These are both "high end" steak houses and while I haven't been to the San Antonio Ruth's Cris I did go in another city so have been to two high end steak houses now. Not something I generally do but had a groupon so last night we went to Myron's.
These are our impressions:
ATMOSPHERE - Very nice , Classy looking restaurant....nice atmosphere but a little dark. Found it a bit hard to read the menus. SERVICE - was overall very good. James, our server, was extremely polite and knew the menu well. I am not sure whether he checked on us after we got our steaks but perhaps he did once. We overheard other tables being offered more bread, etc. but ours was gone. Someone did bring me more iced tea after we were finished and he brought us the dessert menu about the same time. PRICES - Very High but I knew that going into this. SALAD/SOUP - My wife really liked the chopped salad...said it was really great. I had the soup dejour, a jalapeno chedder bisque which was good. STEAKS - Myron's is known for its steaks so I went in with great expectations. They were good but not great so we were a little disappointed. My wife got the Kansas City Filet. Seasoning on this filet was very good but there seemed to be a bit too much gristle. I got the filet and shrimp...seasoning was not as good on this but it was good. Our MAIN Disappointment with the steak was that my wife ordered hers MEDIUM and I ordered mine MEDIUM RARE. Unfortunately, they were swapped. Hers was medium rare and mine medium. We know we could have sent them back but did not...we were hungry. After dinner was concluded we asked our server if we had perhaps asked for the wrong doneness on our steaks and he, without even looking said my wife's should have been medium and mine medium rare so it was a kitchen mistake.
CONCLUSION - If there is one thing a high end steak house should be able to do is to get your steak cooked just as you ordered it. I mentioned Ruth's Cris at the beginning of my review largely because when we ate at Ruth's Cris though I had ordered my rib eye medium rare it came out medium well. That time I sent it back this time I did not. I just didn't want to wait while they re-fired our steaks. If you are paying $40-$50 for a steak it should be cooked just as you ordered it and you should not have to send it back. I give three stars only because our steaks were not cooked properly...this should not happen in a place like this...for the prices being paid for the food the entire experience should be outstanding....I am 0 for 2 at these high end steak houses.
SO....would I go back to Myron's...I doubt it.....If I am going to spend that much money for dinner I would much rather go to one of the Brazilian Steak Houses in the area. They are a much better value for the money...pretty much as "elegant", have VERY attentive servers...dinner costs about the same (actually less) but you get that huge salad/vegetable bar and all the steak and meat you can eat. Just can't beat that!....BUT hey...this is just my opinion...I know many LOVE these two...

The experience was so bad that my girlfriend and I were skeptical and borderline afraid to return, we even left a scathing review, so you can tell this review is genuine in every respect. The chef from the original review has been let go and now a chef worth their salt is in the kitchen! Long story short: 5 star service, 5 star food.
The difference between the first time we went and tonight is night and day.
Once again upon coming up to the establishment there was someone waiting to open the door for us when we reached about 15 feet away which was very nice, Ruth Chris and Perry's don't even offer that courtesy.
The waiter was extremely knowledgeable and well mannered, he gave honest opinions and recommendations. Attentive and courteous which made us feel that he was actually grateful that we had come. It's a good feeling to be in that kind of environment.
But as always the real test is the food: First, they've fixed the bread and butter situation. The bread was hot and soft this time with a fresh flavor and the butter was normal butter, as opposed to last time where the butter had a tangy strange and strong flavor to it; meaning the restaurant learned from the feedback and improved their food choices, which shows a lot in restaurant management.
The lobster bisque had a rich and strong flavor to it, with the lobster chunks melting in my mouth. The bowl was empty in 5 minutes with the remainder mopped up with my bread.
The appetizer, which was my personal favorite, would have me driving across state just to have it again. I am referring to the wasabi seared tuna. This tuna had the perfect texture and perfect flavor, and for those of us that love heat with our fish, they had a shiner bock mustard drizzle the plate that you could run your tuna across as well as some fresh wasabi on the side. I lived in Japan for 4 years and never had fish this good. My taste buds were in heaven and my girlfriend was annoyed at how much I was raving about it.
The coffee tasted standard but that's not why you come here anyway.
The garlic mashed potatoes and scalloped potatoes complimented the steak perfectly and both of our plates were polished off.
Now for the main dish: The steaks. I ordered a medium rare bone-in ribeye oscar style, my date ordered a medium rare filet. Cooked to perfection with an unmatched flavor and melted in my mouth, I left GLOWING.
As for my date, I can't speak for her. However I can tell you that no matter what restaurant we go to she only takes a few bites of her food, takes the rest to go, and never eats it after it ends up in the fridge. However her plate was CLEAN this time. She even finished her steak before I finished mine.
5 star service. 5 star food. Will come back again, if not for the steak, that tuna which...
Read moreWhat an expensive mistake. The experience was so poor, we thought we were getting pranked. We went to celebrate my birthday, party of two. Combined, we ordered "Myron style" ribeye (topped with shrimp and sauce), bone-in ribeye both medium, a loaded baked potato, jalapeño mac and cheese- one wheel lettuce and chopped salad. Chopped salad wasn't my favorite, no big deal, it's just a salad. We had to ask our waiter numerous times and remind him of our bread.
Our waiter-- made it a point to ONLY address my male date. He would blatantly look directly at him, ask him how he was doing, ask about his meal, ask if everything was ok, even at the end, he thanked him, wished him a safe drive and happy holidays. Even while knowing we were celebrating my birthday. There were times that he would refill his drink only then minutes later finally see me in the sidelines with an empty glass and do his job. When I would finally ask him questions about my meal or anything, he would totally invade my personal space and be LITERALLY inches away from my face and to top it off, with bad breath.
My ribeye was undercooked so he took it to the back to put a little more fire on it. Second time around, it was good. When he brought out our meal, the waiter unwrapped the baked potato from the foil and handled it with his bare hands, flipping and tossing and opening up the potato!! Gross!
I guess we are used to GREAT service but our table wasn't cleared throughout the evening and that was another disappointment. Especially for a $200 check.
Alas, the moment I knew I would never come back is when the waiter gave us a comment card to fill out towards the end while waiting for our check. He was adamant on us filling it out and made us fully aware the comments we leave of him were seen and they (employees) have a raffle going on with that. He then gave us the check, and waited for us to fill out the comment card before picking up the check when we were ready to pay. I am not a jerk, so I ended up leaving a comment of the food. I mentioned that the steak was good the second time around, and the mac & cheese was delicious. When he picked up the check, he read the comment card, invading my personal space, and 2 inches away from my face asked me with LITERALLY, a sad puppy face if I was going to leave a comment of him on there. I awkwardly avoided answering.
I think overall, what contributed to the bad experience was the waiter. And that is unfortunate for the restaurant. It is very overpriced, for the experience we had. But mostly, as a female, I was offended the entire night when I wasn't addressed. It was sexist and a horrible experience for what should have been a...
