Shangrila — Restaurant in San Antonio

I've been eating here a few years now, and I pretty much just order the General Chicken. I've tried a few other items from their menu, but the General Chicken is the item I really love.

They offer the General Chicken as a plate which comes with fried rice, steamed broccoli, crab rangoon, and eggroll, but I usually opt for the al a carte option. The a la carte is a large box of general chicken, a side of steamed broccoli, and a separate container of rice. It is a huge plate full, enough to feed 2-3 people easily. When I take it to go It feeds the family or makes a few meals.

What makes this general chicken so good is that the chicken is fried to a crisp, and then covered in a sweet sauce that has excellent flavor. Its got a good amount of garlic and green onion in it, and the occasional red chili, but its sweet and mildly spicy.

The staff is always accommodating and on the few occasions Ive had the chance to speak with the owners, found them very friendly. I regularly request substitution of the fried rice for steamed rice, and an extra container of the general sauce to make mine extra saucy and they are happy to make the changes.

Another item that is good from here is the eggdrop soup, which comes with crispy wontons, if your looking for an appetizer.

My 5 star rating is based on recent experiences. I usually order by phone and pickup to go.

Sweet and sour chicken-chicken was cooked well, breading somewhat crispy, average breading, sauce is average

Moo shu beef-vegitables bordering on soft cooked, beef cooked well, very saucey, pancakes subpar, house sauce average

Ribs-not consistent, first time I ate them they were cooked well with the right amount of sauce, second time I ate them they were cooked well but lacked sauce

Sides-fried rice very bland with few vegitables, steamed rice cooked as expected, eggroll were average

Service-friendly service for to go ordering, meal was made fairly quickly, everything was packed well
