I have been going to Bully’s for over 20 years. Have considered it a hidden gem and have gone there for happy hours, dates and group dinners. Yesterday evening, my boyfriend and I had reservations at another steakhouse in downtown and decided at the last minute to switch it to Bully’s as it’s one of our favorites, and we didn’t want to deal with the large crowds for New Year’s Eve. We were sat at a small table alongside the bar. Dinner began normal enough, the waitress was quick to take our drink and food order and get our dinner going. Shortly after we were seated, a drunken lone football fan probably about in her 60s came and sat at the bar about 4 feet away from us and began loudly speaking to the bartender. While she was loud and swearing a lot, it was harmless enough and we tried to ignore her and their conversation and enjoy our date. As we were waiting for our food to arrive, I got up to go to the restroom. They were discussing football and the teams that they liked watching. The drunk football fan mentioned the 49ers and the bartender (who is a white male) said “oh yeah, I grew up watching Montana and Rice in the 80’s. I like the 49ers but I’m not a fan of the team. I’m also not a Mexican, so I’m not a Raiders Fan either.” I looked over my shoulder at the bartender after he said that because I was absolutely shocked he would say something that racist and ignorant. When I came back from the restroom, my boyfriend mentioned that he had heard the comment too. My boyfriend and I are both Mexican and my boyfriend was born and raised in San Diego and is a first generation American. Spoiler alert- He is NOT a Raider fan.

We were both so incredibly offended by the bartenders comment and at that point our NYE date night was ruined. We let the manager know what had happened and that we did not want to finish our meal and they didn’t offer to comp the meal. We got up to leave (we had eaten about a quarter of our food and left in on the table) My boyfriend had lost his patience at that point and told the bartender that he should be a lot more careful about what he says when he’s behind the bar especially if it’s going to be racist and offensive to customers. The bartender didn’t apologize, he actually began to defend what he said and justify it because he is married to a Mexican woman. Then the drunken football fan started yelling at us as well. I was truly shocked and we left before it escalated further.

We don’t come to Bully’s to listen to offensive comments about our race made by an employee. Management really didn’t do much to rectify the offense even though they were made aware, and I am very disappointed in how the whole situation went down. I’m also very sad because Bully’s was one of my favorite restaurants and now I don’t feel comfortable...

I went there for dinner with my family, so there were four of us in total. We ordered some stuff mushrooms from the appetizer menu and a few drinks since we got there in the last 10 minutes of happy hour. The drinks came, and then my mom ordered a fillet mignon extremely rare, stressing it repeatedly and the waitress said no problem. I ordered the bone in ribeye, medium rare. My two sisters just ordered appetizers as their meal. The stuffed mushroom appetizers never arrived before the meal so we remind the waitress. The size of the filet mignon cut of meat that arrived was great, but it was cooked medium, so it had to be sent back. My ribeye was obviously a lower quality cut of meat and slightly over cooked but I didn’t bother sending it back hoping the flavor would make up for it but unfortunately was disappointed there too, but the French onion soup I got as my side was excellent. One of my sisters had ordered the triple mac & cheese with Greer cheddar and something else but she said it seemed like there was only one she isn’t. It was a cheap American so she was not very happy with it. meanwhile the stuff mushrooms has still not arrived. My mothers filet mignon came back and this was again another great cut of meat, but this time cooked correctly and she was very happy with it. Unfortunately, she couldn’t eat too much of it because she’s already eaten a potato when the first steak arrived and now is no longer very hungry. Guess what the stuffed mushrooms finally arrived and they were lousy. Three of us tried them, and none of us liked them. I ordered the peanut butter mousse pie for dessert which was excellent. One of my sisters ordered the mud pie for dessert but the ice cream was crystallized as if it had been refrozen so she wasn’t very happy about that either. The waitress disappeared for long periods of time we had to ask for to go box for the steak and had to wait to find someone to ask for the check finally. I don’t know if our waitress was new or they just had her stretched too thin, she was friendly, but constantly apologizing because of all the problems. I would definitely not recommend this restaurant to anyone as it is very pricey, and the food does not at least...

This place used to be great. Unfortunately it appears now they are on the verge of going out of business and don't care about quality. I made dinner reservations for my family and saw they had a brunch menu. My wife and I decided to try it before the dinner. It wasn't a good idea. My wife has been in the industry for a long time and runs several restaurants in San Diego. She noticed the country potatoes were reheated from probably the day before and were soggy and disgusting. I ordered the breakfast burrito which consisted of the same potatoes and bits of ham and undercooked eggs. The hash browns were barely cooked and cold inside as if they just came out of a freezer. I took two bites of each and couldn't bring myself to do a third bite...gross. I also found it funny that I asked for salsa when my burrito arrived and the waitress told me they don't have any....... seriously, serving Mexican food and don't have salsa?

We thought brunch was a fluke and kept our dinner reservation..... horrible mistake. There were 8 of us and only two reported their meal was good. From soggy fries to very undercooked and overcooked meat to bland food, the the meal was horrible. I should hav ed know when we sat down at our table and the manager was apologizing to another couple for their food. I told the manager of the issues and he said he would take care of it but is obviously out of his league in a restaurant as his cure was to take my wife's steak back to the kitchen scrape of the toppings (sauce and glaze) and reheat. When it returned, the piece she cut off was laying there showing it was just reheated (this kills the taste of steak). I decided to just send my extremely well done burger back and went without. The manager never returned to our table to see how the second meals turned out but told the waitress to tell us we were not going to be charged for the burger or a "second" steak. OMG this place has fallen. I would recommend finding a different spot as they appear to be just waiting to go out...

Marc was our attentive, patient waiter. We ordered the wedge salad, which had loads of blue cheese. My friend had fresh brewed tea. We decided on the prime rib and the potato cheese with some jalapenos in it. It had a smooth texture (not like the lumpy Marie Calendars which I like also). She had the onion soup and liked it. They changed the menu and the Mac and cheese still has the bread crumbs on it, but it is a different recipe than before, it did not have the beefy broth that made it out of this world good. They also do not carry the scalloped potatoes! Bummer. Marc let us enjoy our (large) salads before having the prime rib come out. We chose medium and it was perfect. The horse radish sauce and the broth was tasty, the blue cheese sauce we asked for was not great for us. We took left overs and had to try the Creme Brulee. It had a ripe strawberry on top. The bus boy was on it asking if he could clear plates. Even the napkins were the good quality ones. Some great seventies hits were playing in the background and some games were on the TVs in the other room. We were at a booth with a white table cloth and dark wood around us. The ladies' bathroom has two stalls and hooks for purses. One sink. It was leisurely, no rush experience. Marc was playful with his "French" accent and checking in with us. My friend had never been there before and said she would return. Was it expensive? It was around $66 per person for a large meal. It was not busy at all for a Thursday night. Why not support a local restaurant? I only wish the happy hour had more appetizers.

Came here on New Year’s Day for lunch and we were lucky because it was a slow morning then it picked up when we left. This is an old establishment that’s been around since 1971 and you can tell by the decor. It has a dark and intimate setting. We sat at the booths by the bar and got a chance to speak to the locals who have been regulars throughout the years. I got a Lavender Peach Lemon Drop ($14) and the gentleman got an Old Fashioned ($14). Both very tasty. For brunch, you get the brunch menu but can order a few items off the dinner menu like burgers and prime rib. I ordered what they are known for, 8 oz Horseradish crusted prime rib ($38.75) with mashed potatoes as the side. The gentleman got The Bully Burger ($16) with steak fries. It also came with soup or salad. I got abondigus which is a meatball soup and he got French onion. Very tasty. I’m not a fan of onion soup but I was able to eat this one. Overall, the food was average. I should have went with the regular cut not horseradish crusted. It’s just panko flakes on top and horseradish sauce. I found myself scrapping off the crust. The burger was delicious. The patty was juicy. We also got chilaquiles ($14) from the brunch menu and it wasn’t the best because the chips got soggy quick. However, their happy hour menu looks amazing with deals such as $3 rib bones, M-F 4-6:30pm.

Really old school steakhouse establishment. I brought my top sales rep here as a thank you for all his hard work, and honestly I wanted to come here myself since I haven’t ate here in a decade (native San Diegan here). He didn’t know anything about Bully’s. They first thing I noticed was how busy it was, and then how less than clean everything was. Should have been a red flag, but I ignored it as our time was super limited. I had prime rib, my colleague had top sirloin. Both cuts of meat looked pretty good and mine was tender, but boring. Had a salad with vinaigrette (not pictured). Long story short, I have mild food poisoning, and judging from whats coming out of me it was likely the salad or dressing, but hey, it could have been the watery horseradish (I ate a little and asked for fresh instead). Obviously steak houses are all very pricey these days; our meal with no alcohol was $120, but had I not gotten sick I would have shrugged it off and never visited again. I was tempted to call them and let them know, but a restaurant that’s been in business this long and allows it to fall into this condition would ignore anything I would have to say anyway. Getting a great steak without going to a chain like Morton’s or Fleming’s or to one of the Little Italy or Gaslamp pretentious eateries is getting to be impossible.
