Came here on a weekday for lunch and sat at the sushi bar. Hane Sushi closes at 2pm, but reopens later for dinner. It wasn't too busy when I walked in around 12:30pm, but they had a solid amount of tables about an hour later. Service did not appear to falter just because it was close to closing... it actually got even more attentive, but not in a pushy "we're about to close" way. Staff here is super nice and I can tell that the chefs are happy to chat with customers to find out what they like. I got the crunchy salmon roll ($24--the menu posted on their website says $19, but that's very outdated) and the special ceviche roll ($27). Based on past reviews and pics on Google, the ceviche roll has been available for several years now (and should probably be on the regular menu), but maybe they switch up the fish here and there? Mine had spicy tuna/avocado inside and was topped with seared yellowtail, cilantro and jalapeño.
The fish was verrrrry fresh and of great quality. The location and ambiance is also nice, but nothing special. I will say though, that the entire place was super clean, even the bathrooms.
I think that Hane's prices are a little higher than they should be, but I feel like that's most places in SD. The fact it cost me about $50 for two special rolls during lunch is the reason why I won't be back again anytime soon. I There are other places in the area that offer quality sushi with lunch specials, or just more reasonable pricing generally. I'd still recommend Hane Sushi to others based on the quality and good experience, but this place is better suited as a date night rather than a...
Read moreI used to love coming here as a second choice when Ota was fully booked for the night. But tonight was a disappointment.
Quality seems to be going downhill. If I'm spending $100+ on sushi, I expect the quality of fish to be super fresh. It was mediocre at best. And the rice had way too much vinegar, destroyed any natural taste from the sashimi cuts...
We ordered two chirashi bowls, amaebi (sweet shrimp), halibut fin nigiri and a salmon skin handroll. The cuts on each fish just didn't have the freshness that we are used to at Ota or Hane. And the rice was drenched in way too much sushi vinegar. So bad that it overpowered any flavor from the sashimi cuts. All you can taste is sourness in each bite.
The amaebi wasn't even served the proper way with the moving shrimp head on the plate. It was cooked while we ate the shrimp tail, which takes away from the novelty of ordering this dish. But that's not the problem. Again, way too much sushi vinegar on the rice (and way too much rice as well for nigiri).
I don't think I'll ever come back as my last two experiences (last time at Ota and this recent trip at Hane) wasn't that great. Seems most of their best sushi chefs left to open their own sushi spots so it's only the mediocre...
Read moreThe whole set up of the place is weird- no waiting area inside or outside. We reserved the table by walking in, we were told 45min wait time (Friday evening) which was understandable but at the same time half of the tables were empty (couple next to each other which I doubt due to the social distancing as other tables were seated next to each other), management of tables weren't very good. We waited inside right on the side of the path were people were walking in and out which made bit awkward. The food was ok, rolls were very simple (2 or 3 ingredients), small portions for the price. Food was fresh and well presented though. The outside area looked very cosy and romantic but we were seated right next to the table occupied by 4 guests who were clearly too intoxicated and loud and when they asked for more alcohol, they were served so we left pretty fast after we ate as it felt uncomfortable. Could be really nice place to eat if it would be managed more...
