Jyoti-Bihanga is a Normal Heights vegetarian restaurant operated by a spiritual group dedicated to the teachings of Sri Chinmoy. I normally wouldn't mention or care about the spiritual leanings of the individuals who run a restaurant, except that it is woven into the fabric of Jyoti-Bihanga, with pictures of Chinmoy meditating, spiritual messages written on the pale blue walls, and colorful Indian saris worn by the service staff.
My vegetarian dragged me here a few times when she was vegetarian, and I haven't yet been disappointed.
The item I've most ordered off of Jyoti-Bihanga's menu is the "Neatloaf," a mock meatloaf made of grains, tofu, eggs, and ricotta cheese, glazed with a sweet ketchup-y barbecue sauce, and served with mashed potatoes and gravy. I eat real meatloaf from time-to-time, and I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between this and a meatloaf served at any other random restaurant in a blind taste test.
This restaurant serves hearty vegetarian comfort food, not lame tofu n' noodles dishes. I have to credit them for making vegetarian food as rich and...
Read moreI love their food. Nice atmosphere.Very nice people. Great take out. Packed neatly. We’ve been eating here for years. Highly recommend the Neat Loaf vegan option, vegetarian is offered as well. I get the Rama Bowl with extra cashew cream. A side of their bomb soup for $2 extra. You can’t go wrong with anything. All the food is good. Fresh. The restaurant is spotless. My husband always loves to get the Buddha burger. They home make really good soups and have 2-3 soup options daily. Definitely one of my top 3 favorite vegan eateries in San Diego. Off street parking is convenient, close and free. Shared with the liquor store and bar next door. They also have designated handicap parking. *Try the beet hummus appetizer. They also have raw vegan options. Lots of gluten free as well. Stated clearly on the menu, or ask your server. *Call in your order ahead instead of using the Toast App. Inside/outside...
Read moreI keep coming back for the vegan loaf, and the breakfast buffet.
Majority vegan restaurants I've been to are usually very salty and use protein products from the frozen section you buy from grocery store. If you wanted anything healthy tasting you main as well just buy a green smoothie from a smoothie bar somewhere that doesn't use a sugary unnatural fruit flavored slim.
But my new found jewel is right off Adam's Ave, with all the natural ingredients and the great atmosphere to go along with it.
I am 100 percent confident that this restaurant uses fresh and whole ingredients and you can too. Before the place opens, on the side of the building there is a window that let's you see straight into the kitchen where everything is prepared.
I always hoped for a vegan restaurant to have such foods that merely felt like home cooked meals. Well, I sure did find...
