The Rabbit Hole is a standout bar and restaurant in the heart of Normal Heights, and it feels like a staple within the community. This spot has a cool, laid-back vibe and tends to draw a crowd no matter the time of day. Whether you're stopping in for a meal or just a few drinks, there's a welcoming atmosphere that sets it apart from your average bar. During a recent lunch visit, I appreciated that they offered creative mocktails, which was perfect for someone like me who doesn’t drink alcohol. For beer lovers, their selection is extensive, making it a great spot to unwind. The menu has a range of options, and we decided to try a mix of appetizers and entrees. We started with the Buffalo Hummus Stack, which came with beets, feta tzatziki, crispy chickpeas, fresh veggies, and za'atar flatbread. It was flavorful and a great way to kick off the meal. The Dry-Rubbed Wings, available in 6 or 12 pieces with several flavor options, were a hit—we chose the Jalapeño Garlic Butter, which had just the right amount of kick. For the main course, we went with the Pulled Pork Sandwich, which featured smoked ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and Dijon aioli on an Amoroso roll. While the sandwich itself was satisfying, the fries served alongside it were unfortunately cold, which was disappointing. Still, the overall quality of the food was solid and matched the reasonable price point. One of the highlights of The Rabbit Hole is the variety of specials and events they offer. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 4 PM to 6 PM, making it an ideal spot for after-work drinks or a casual meet-up. On weekends, their brunch service runs until 2 PM, providing another opportunity to enjoy their menu in a relaxed setting. If you're in Normal Heights, this place is worth checking out. With a vibrant ambiance, good food, and weekly live music on Tuesday nights, The Rabbit Hole has something for everyone and captures the charm of the neighborhood.

Understaffed, great for dogs, mixed food I went there during Sunday because there was a vintage fair across the street. I came right around 11:00. I didn't get my order taken until 20 to 25 minutes later. These poor guys were slammed. I think I saw two wait staff trying to do the whole restaurant by themselves. Plus one bartender. Who I was later told was new. Everyone working was really kind and trying their best but we didn't get our food until at least an hour after we sat down if not longer. I was about ready to go to the ramen place next door because I got to slowly see it open. Again, super nice staff. At one point a waiter literally helped tie my kids' shoelace after she fell down! So. Sweet. The food? Mixed. I got the Norman Burger. At that point I was so grumpy I was ready to hate everything and be super grumpy/Hangry. But I couldn't. This was a darn fine burger. The meat mix was interesting and the sauces were bright and flavorful. My kids got grilled cheese and fries. It literally looked like they just tossed two slices of Kraft cheese on there and called it a day. That's MY recipe thankyouverymuch lol. The fries were solid on both. The outdoor seating was great. It was clean. After the sun came out they started bringing out the overhead umbrellas. The dogs were very welcome and my kids were in heaven being able to greet them politely. I would probably wait a few months before I went back and gave it another chance. And I definitely wouldn't go there if I was starving and needed a quick appetizer. But it's probably worth a second look.

Overall the place is okay. The beer selection is weak and overpriced for some beers and great prices on others. The plates are overpriced for quality that it is. The children's food came out great and if you go during happy hour at least your can get half price appetizers. The appetizers are okay but not the best. No real parking which is normal for the area. For the price there are a number of other restaurants that do a better job on quality of food. The beer is normal and not special so I am not sure why so many 5 stars? I would like to know what there specialty is? Update September 19th 2021: I am going back through all my reviews of restaurants to be more stringent and to compete my due diligence of each. I have set forth three rules that all restaurant will need to follow to get a three star rating. The three rules for restaurants is the keep it fresh, keep it clean, and keep it simple! Getting a four or five star will become harder, but not impossible! Why? Well, people rating poor restaurants as five stars when they are barely a two or three is commonplace in Google Maps and I would like to fix this problem.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ goes to our server the only reason this experince was toleratable. His name was Jordan did fantastic.

The reason this is getting a one star is because of a few reasons listed below.

I have work as a server for about 8 years and wow this place needs help.

Menu changes. After reviewing your WEBSITE we were excited only to find that the menu is completely different. We were told that facebook is kept up more often. When you search up the menu your website pops up first so perhaps update the website! so we don't have our expectations crushed.

Communications Our server diligently greeted tables that had been ignored by 2 or more servers he took care of them quickly. They were upset but looked happy as we left so props to him for taking charge. Hostess and other servers need to always greet tables let them know someone will be there if its busy. Which is basic training that Jordan used so perfectly.

Now to address the largest issue The food.

Where do I even begin. From my understanding this place had reputable amount of food choices that I was told was amazing. After realizing that those options weren't available we choose off the new menu. Now.

The squid row tasted unlike any calamari I had ever had. It was gross and appeared to be a part of the squid that has the least flavor. Where are the tentacles? What about the breading? It tasted so bland and uneventful.

The wrap was a joke. The "cubed chicken" was a lovely touch making this dish impossible to eat. Strange to add something like kettle chips INSIDE the wrap which is strange and not worded clearly in the menu thank GOD our server spared us the embarrassment of eating something so unconventional.

The cubby bunny melt which one of the members at our table who frequently came here for. was appalled the quality that was at least 10 steps down from where it was held So high. A huge dissapointment.

Lastly, my dish the Cobb turkey it was okay, not impressed nothing special. I had the best "dish" at the table. This was the equvilant to an Applebees or a Coney island. The worst ive had in San Diego so far in the many years ive visted here.

For 75$ we got the worst quality of food ive ever had in my years of experince and eating out.

I am shocked you have such a great staff who did such a good job considering you havebt given them any tools to work with. They have to take and apologize what management and kitchen has destroyed.

I personally would never work for a place I have to apologized for how awful the food was. You are so lucky you still have a staff that puts up with this type of constant complaints. I would hire Jordan in heartbeat hes outstanding and it disappoints me that he has to work for such a stagnate place which is dealing with complaints and clearly has done nothing about it.

My suggestion? Change the quality or train the kitchen on more flavor ettiquet so that your whole staff can benefit. The menu could have promise if the quality and flavor was there 70$ for this? Is disgusting. Id pay 70$ for a good meal not this.

This is coming from a person of buisness and restaurant experience. Who understands food cost, labor cost etc.. Work with what you have sure but strive for the quality. Your staff seems great but you need a team to be successful I really hope Management does address these issues so that the staff with jordans work ethic doesnt...
