So I visited San Diego and wanted to check out a good soul food spot. Due to the global pandemic most other places were closed and this one was open. My friends and I ordered our food and waited about 30-45 mins for it to be brought to us (which i thought was nice, due to the pandemic and all. When I got back to my room, ready to chow down on my food (after washing my hands) i sat down to eat and there was NO eating utensils in my bag.....SO my man and I had to go to our local gas station and purchase a pack of eating utensils. When we finally got back to our room to try this again we began to eat. Now the wings he ordered had absolutely NO seasonings on it. I'm not sure if it was even salted or peppered. My beef ribs I ordered were good to say the least however I could tell the actual meat had no seasoning, aside of the barbeque sauce everything else was bland on the ribs. Then we get to our sides.....our candied yams were not really candied at all they tasted like sweet potatoes no brown sugar, no butter, no yam sauce. Lol. On the mac and cheese, there was ABSOLUTELY, NO cheese involved. It tasted like I was eating pasta noodles and that's it. I thought their noodle choice was unique though, they used some type of Fusilli noodle. Anywho....I found that disappointing because the lady told me "The Mac and Cheese is poppin' today." So I excitedly bought a side order of Mac. Much to my surprise it wasn't "poppin'" at all. Which brings us to the collard greens. They had no salt or pepper either. They probably would have been better with hot sauce but I didn't give it a go. The customer service was great however and I could appreciate that. I probably won't be eating at this restaurant again. I could appreciate someone looking out for my health because diabetes and blood pressure is very serious so, nothing personal I just l prefer my food seasoned even lightly if nothing else. Thanks for...
Read moreLet me preface this by saying I'm not picky. I wasn't looking for a miracle from this place or anything. I don't like to leave negative reviews but the food was so not good I would feel bad for not warning other people. I just hope that my immune system is up to the task I've set before it.
I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. The meat was fine, and the tater tots were great! BUT the bun tasted weird, not moldy but kind of musty like it sat for too long on a cutting board that somebody wiped down with an old rag (if you've worked in mediocre food service you know the rag I'm talking about).
I got two desserts and tried the peach cobbler - the first bite, I got the taste of soap and that same rag flavor the bun had, but not much else. The peaches were vaguely crunchy and the texture of the cobbler part was like... weirdly solid gelatinous clumps. I tried to go for a second bite thinking maybe that bit was a fluke... but no, the second bite was just as bad if not worse and I ended up spitting it back out into the container, then tossing the whole thing. I tried a crumb of the bread pudding and it's the same weird unpleasant texture + flavor as the cobbler. I'm honestly afraid of getting sick so I'm going to just toss it all.
What a depressing waste of money. If you're craving peach cobbler tonight, save yourself the heartbreak and order one from Cali Comfort BBQ instead.
To the restaurant: please, you have some great ideas but you guys need to sit down and take a good hard look at where these complaints are coming from. Maybe cut the menu down by a few pages and really focus on the quality of fewer items. I'm concerned about the cleanliness of the kitchen - there are ways to properly clean containers and work surfaces so they don't transfer unwanted flavors to the food and that is clearly not happening here. My mouth is still tingling...
Read moreI actually can’t believe there are bad reviews on here. I had my first try of soul food last week from here: pork ribs w/barbecue sauce, Mac and cheese, & hush puppies! I came back 3 days in a row after that! I can’t get enough of this place. The pork ribs are SO TENDER the barbecue sauce is nice! The hush puppies are so comforting they shut you up. so darn good. And the best part; I haven’t even mentioned yet: THE MAC AND CHEESE IS THE BEST MAC AND CHEESE IVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! It is the reason I keep coming back. I always change my other entrees and sides whenever I go here but the Mac and cheese is something I will never let go of. I know I may be coming off as a bit dramatic but I told my friend that if I’m ever offered my last meal on my deathbed, it would be the Mac and cheese from shot caller. Always. Don’t even bother asking me😂 apart from the the ribs, I’ve gotten jumbo shrimp with multiple sauces, and fries and I will keep coming back until I have tried the whole menu. The variety of choices is unmatched and excites you. The entree portions are satisfying and the only reason I would say the side portions feel small, is because you can’t get enough of them. The pork ribs I got came with 3 ribs, packed with meat and could’ve easily made me full on its own. I gave the other ribs to my family members and they were all amazed by the ribs- said they were excellent! The prices seem a little excessive until you try the food. Nobody I know can get enough of this place. The quality is there. You know when you try your grandmothers food and you can taste that she made it with love? Yea, it’s even better than that. Fell back in my chair with a sigh of relief the first bite I had. I could feel all the stress leaving my body lol in other words: yea it’s...
