Soul Food City — Restaurant in San Diego

Being from Houston, stationed in Cali, was craving some good soul food. I ordered through DoorDash and seen the reviews on how amazing their Mac n Cheese is. I ordered smothered Talapia, green beans and Mac n cheese. They must have given me bottom of the barrel, overcooked, crusty Mac n cheese. Because this was not pleasant to eat. Overall, the food was good, just highly disappointed in the side, i was excited to try. I also order at 7pm, well before their closing time. So I’m disappointed it was not fresh.

2/27/23 update- I have given this place 3 tries now and it will be my last. This place is not consistent at all, each time i have ordered it’s always been something. First time i ordered here it was at 7pm and we got the bottom of the barrel food. Gave it a second try and it was during lunch time and it came out better. Tonight, i didnt feel like cooking and the order was atrocious. I ordered smothered Tilapia, rice and gravy, greens and an extra side for $5 of yams. Goodness gracious, i received plain fried tilapia, heavily salted greens (too salty to even enjoy, i threw it away). Rice with barely any gravy, and they completely did not put in the side of yams i paid extra for. I should have just cooked at home tonight and saved me $40. The owners/staff...

This place is a food hub, make sure you know ahead of time, meaning not much interaction; however, I had a lovely experience. One of the owners brought my food out, she was very friendly and warm, which was nice given that there was only a kiosk person. Now, the food!!!! 😋🤤😋🤤 So delicious! I had only had Soul Food from my friend's mom, and this spot had that homemade feeling and flavor! What made it better was that their sides were vegan!!!! 😭😭😭, I was blown away at how they turned out such delicious vegan food. Each aspect of the dish complimented one another so well, you had the salty, umami, and the sweetness harmonize so well with one another. That food was so good I ended up ordering a second plate to go! I'm from the OC....not much delicious options in the vegan department, so I had to have some Soul Food go back home with me! Another place that has clearly mistaken salt as a seasoning when in fact it is a preservative and has no place as a dominate ingredient in any dish. This was the worst dish I have ever eaten. I order the fried catfish, greens and Mac. This stuff was salty it burned my tongue.

The catfish also dripping in oil soggy. Terrible. They also ran out of ribs and decided to substitute a dried up pork chop that was salted to death.

If we like soggy over salted food then this your place. Keep the paddles near you’ll need em Eating this stuff.

They substituted a pork chop for a slab of ribs. I requested someone call back to refund my money. I hope they take care of this issue and I tipped the driver 15%. Not his issue but it’s the principle of it all.
