If you are on a diet, I strongly encourage you to visit Stella Jean’s.
You will order a split cup of ube toffee and mango enchilado. You will pay, kind of a lot you think. Your ice cream will arrive unceremoniously, and it will be freakish: purple, orange, blood-striped. You will consider it in the way a person considers whether a hot dog can properly be called a sandwich. You will taste a small mixture of both, courageously. You will visit the self-absorbed daydream that it would be nice, one day, to invent a word specifically for tasting courageously. And then your mind will hang. You will be out of processors. You will stare unblinking at your spoon as “ube” reverberates in your skull until it becomes a meaningless, soothing chant. No more thinking now, only ice cream. Mango will taste higher pitched, and then something, maybe several things, spicy will chime in, loudly, oh so loudly sometimes! Until toffee arrives: shhh, shh, it’s alright, toffee is here. But your mouse cursor will still be spinning. As the band plays on you will wander around in a stupor, eating more, bumping into the comically inadequate seating outside. Then you will bite into a larger piece of chocolate something that has absconded from another flavor into your cup–Who dares this?Dissonance! Rage! But as your serving dwindles the moment will pass, and in your denouement you will confront your wrongness in rejecting the chocolate piece–it really was a quite good chocolate piece after all–and you will be pricked with embarrassment for not being sure originally what ube would taste like, and you will stare at the sky and be overcome.
Your family will find you eventually, and you will make some excuse. The night will end, on to other meals. On Friday there will be dinner out, and someone will broach the subject of dessert. You will be forced to stifle a laugh–a laugh! It will be awkward; they will not follow. You will promise to have “just a bite,” business as usual, good cover. The dessert will come with dots and swooshes, balancing the weight of someone’s great effort. You will try some with appropriate gravity, and you will say “mmmm it’s good!” and you will not lie, and then you will put your fork down easily for the meal and you will feel melancholy. And a...
Read moreStella Jean's Ice Cream is a small-batch ice cream parlour located in the heart of University Heights, San Diego. The shop is known for its unique and flavorful ice cream flavors, many of which are made with fresh, local ingredients.
One of the most popular flavors at Stella Jean's is the guava with cream cheese ice cream. This seasonal flavor is made with fresh guavas, and it is the perfect balance of sweet and tart. The cream cheese adds a touch of richness and creaminess, and the overall flavor is simply delicious.
Another thing that sets Stella Jean's apart from other ice cream shops is the long line that is usually out the door. This is a good sign, as it means that the ice cream is worth the wait. The staff at Stella Jean's is friendly and helpful, and they are always happy to give recommendations on flavors.
The history of Stella Jean's is also quite interesting. The shop was started by partners Steven Torres and Chef Gan Suebsarakhama, who were both passionate about ice cream. They started the shop in their garage, and it quickly became a local favorite. In 2016, they opened a second location next door to their ice cream shop, a pie shop called Pot Pies.

Read moreSo , my wife and I are in San Diego for a quick weekend. We went out with some friends for dinner and felt like doing ice cream. We went to Anne's which is supposed to be the best ice cream in the US, but the long line turned us away. Read on a few reddit threads that Stella Jean is actually better so went over there. The line was not too long and we were in within 15 mins The Ube Pandesal and the mango and sticky rice were highly recommended so I took the split single with these 2 flavors without even trying them out. Uber Pandesal - 10/10. I've never had anything like this before . It was a new flavor profile for me and my pallet gleefully accepted it. I could taste notes of cake, waffles, toffee, buttery and crunchy. The color was also interesting. Mango with sticky rice - 2/10. Oh what a disappointment. I could only take the mango, and not the sticky rice so this is nothing like the Thai dessert we're used to. Additionally the mango sorbet has far too many ice clunks making the experience really poor. I was surprised to see so many reviews raving about this flavor. Perhaps I just got the short end...
