The food is overpriced for how bland it was. The crumpet was the most exceptional thing of the entire meal. The brisket was overcooked, under seasoned, and dry. The tomato and egg dish was bland, lacking salt and sumac (or any seasoning). The cocktail was fine. The porch is kind of cute. The service was fine. The only reason we sought this restaurant out is because a friend gave us a gift card for Cafe 21. There was no sign that this was no longer Cafe 21. The menu said this was Cafe 21. The receipt said this was Cage 21. The owner, however, refused to accept the gift card despite the multiple signs stating that it was Cafe 21. There are much better brunch spots in San Diego. With the change in ownership, many of the qualities that made Cafe 21 my place of solace still remain at the Hangout Restaurant and Bar. It will take some time to get used to the new name, but I still love coming here. My mom and I decided to get the short rib omelette and the Dutch pancake(both were amazing). when the food came out, I lay my eyes upon the perfect amount of tender short rib sat atop a fluffy, bright mound of eggs.
