Ultimate Guide to San Francisco's Best Bakeries (10 Must-Visit Spots)

Arizmendi Bakery is a must-visit gem in San Francisco's Inner Sunset neighborhood near Golden Gate Park. I highly recommend it for locals and tourists alike. The sign outside brought me in. For those of you who've seen Inside Out, do you remember the scene about broccoli pizza? Arizmendi inspired it. I came in for the pizza by the slice, but left with more goodies from their extensive and delicious bakery shelves. The breadsticks in particular are not to be missed. As for the pizza, you can get a palm-sized hot slice for $3.50. That's an excellent value for something so tasty. It was enough for a light lunch, but I could have easily bought two without breaking the bank. There's a parklet outside and some other benches to sit and eat. Golden Gate Park is about a 10-15 minute walk away if you'd like another option for a great picnic. Arizmendi is a worker-owned cooperative (co-op), which also makes them stand out. You see it in the care that the worker-owners take in their goods, and in the assistance the front-of-house staff offer their customers. I'm very happy to support this unique and important business model. I can't wait to come back to Arizmendi Bakery the next time I'm on my way to the Japanese Tea Garden, Botanical Garden, DeYoung Art Museum, the Cal Academy of Science, or anything else in the nearby area. Save a couple of broccoli slices for me šŸ˜‹

Family raved about this bakery and stated it's a must try! Just avoid mornings, lunch time, and right after work since the lines can get fairly long. Food/Taste/Flavor: 4/5 - Four cheese focaccia was cheesy, moist, airy, and has a hint of olive oil taste. A slight sprinkle of parmesan cheese adds just a bit saltiness for you to want another bite. It is quite heavy though Brioche knot reminds us of the milk bread you can find at Asian bakeries. It has a sweetness that is heightened by the dried fruits inside and a richness that is so satisfying. The bread is really soft and can easily be torn into smaller pieces Scone of the day with dried fruits just couldn't compare to the brioche knot in terms of flavor or texture. While it's crumbly texture was wonderful, it needed some clotted cream to compete against the other items purchased Ambience: N/A - small window that you order to go from Service: 5/5 - quick and to the point. It was just after 5:00 PM before it for super busy and he was willing to answer questions and make recommendations Value for price: 5/5 - delicious bread, slightly pricey but worth it for satisfying any cravings

The bread is fantastic, they have good vegan options, the prices are really reasonable for a big city like SF, and I like that they list out the ingredients for each item.

I arrived a little before 10am, and the line wasn't bad, no more than 10 mins. I got a loaf of sandwich sourdough, vegan lemon poppy seed and banana walnut muffins, and the vegan focaccia square.

The sourdough had a beautiful crackly crust, soft open crumb, and had a wonderful aroma.

The vegan lemon poppyseed muffin was great, and I love that they use rice bran oil instead of coconut oil in their vegan desserts. Most other bakeries use coconut oil for vegan desserts, which I think is supposed to be not very good for you (but who knows with nutritional guidance changing all the time).

The banana walnut muffin was the only major disappointment. I think there was a miscommunication and they gave me the non vegan version. From the few bites I had before realizing it was probably non vegan, I found it cloyingly sweet and rich 🤢. Would not recommend at all.

The vegan focaccia square was topped with shaved brussel sprouts, a generous amount of oilve oil, and a sprinkle of coarse-ground salt and was super filling and delicious, highly recommend. Just one square was enough to fill me up.

My only suggestion would be to somehow encourage people to look at the menu/display case before they're actually up to order at the register. That should make the line go...

Originally found this chain of bakeries in Emeryville many years ago. Fell in love with their pizza - loved their thin chewy/crunchy crust!! Went to the one on 9th in SF recently to grab a few different items. They advertised on their online pizza menu that they had mushroom pizza that day....YAY! Unfortunately, they didn't and they do say that they don't guarantee that the pizza won't change. Mine was a marinara, manchego, ricotta, basil pizza. It was very tasty, fresh. But, I couldn't taste the manchego and the crust wasn't as good as I remember. Seemed to lack flavor and that yummy chewy texture I remembered and loved (I was eating my slice as I walked back to my car - that's how excited I was). I still intend to go back and try more slices. Puched up some bialis as well....meh! But! I also grabbed the chocolate cherry sourdough loaf....and I am hesitant about anything with cherries as it can be real hit or miss. This was a total hit!! Great flavor, the cherries were wonderfully tart, the chocolate with the tart cherries and sourdough bread....Mmmm, hit all those sweet, sour chewy spots! I was pulling off chunks and noshing big time! Really good toasted with a lil butter too. There was a line out the door when I got there. Lots of people taking whole pizzas to go. I arrived around 11am on a Saturday but the line moved fairly fast. Parking isn't easy. I found a spot 2 blocks away but I also have...
