I have been an avid Cal Mex food fan for a long time and first got to eat homemade when I was a toddler. Grew up in CA and definitely know Mexican food. I have tried it all and tried it everywhere but this is by far the best Cal Mex burrito I have ever had, and I say that having tried it dozens of times here at Chino’s over many decades. If you don’t like their burrito then it can only be because you don’t know Mex food. In a world where Mexican food is starting to be more about the decorations and the margaritas and you can even get disappointed in San Diego with super bland products with no blending of flavors, these folks are still keeping the faith!
Low price for a fantastic burrito that is the size of a mule’s leg and you want to stop eating because you are full but you can’t because it is that damned good.
Authentic taqueria vibe with the classic expert wrist flip when dolling the guac etc. Their skill will make you cry if you ever have to go to a chain burrito place where some kid is moving like molasses and seems like he never saw a tortilla before.
I once told these folks that when I die, I want to be buried under their tortilla steam tray. They are pretty chill but that one got a smile.
Thanks Chino’s for making my time in this Earth a...
Read moreI have been going to Chinos for well over a decade and I have always loved their food. They make everything fresh and fast, and are always very friendly and courteous. They offer many delicious options including varying preparations of chicken, beef and pork, all of which are quite flavorful. My favorite has always been the grilled chicken, which is made with onions and peppers and is perfect on nachos. Also, they offer a decent variety of Mexican sodas. Another thing to note (which some may not think important) is that they make their own chips throughout the day, which are perfect with a side of fresh guacamole.
summary Great value and friendly service. Delicious, fresh food.
update They have added fish, shrimp and al pastor to the menu. The fish is flaky and delicious - best in a taco. The shrimp is very tasty, if a little small and a little rubbery (if you get it to go and wait to eat it). Al pastor is very flavorful and lean, best on nachos...
Read moreThis is a great Balboa st taco shop to stop and wolf down a burrito or taco mid ride. You'll want to bring cash though as cards aren't accepted. This sounds unconventional and inconvenient and at least one of those is true. I understand not wanting to to pay a service fee but in a town of Google pay and apple wallet it seems like a bad choice to not take plastic at all. Heck my food truck takes cards, what gives? Generally generous portions and particularly pushy patrons makes this a place I only semi frequent, semi frequently. I'd rather push the few blocks to Gordo's but sometimes you can't make the distance, and in that instance, chino's...
