Small Space, Big Flavor in North Beach While walking around North Beach and Chinatown, I decided to get some sushi. A quick online search provided a list of places I had already tried, but I came across DJ Sushi. I remembered walking by this restaurant a few times, but I had never gone in to try it. I was the only guest when I arrived at the restaurant, so I decided to dine in. As I walked in, I noticed a long hallway. On the left side was a small seating area, and the kitchen was on the right. The main dining area was straight ahead, and I was surprised that it was a very small but well-organized and clean space. The hostess who greeted me was very nice and offered me some edamame to snack on while I reviewed the menu. I started with miso soup, which was delicious, and then opted for the Omakase, an eight-piece nigiri combo chosen by the chef. It was also very fresh and delicious. I was really happy with my choices. Despite my desire for dessert, especially the mochi and cheesecake, I decided to skip the extra calories. True, DJ Sushi is located in a less desirable part of North Beach, but the food quality there is very high, and the service is pretty good. Do not let the unusual space (for a restaurant) impact you negatively when you walk in. This is an old building in an old area of North Beach, and I assume it was a residential building at some point. If you are craving delicious and fresh sushi while visiting North Beach, consider DJ Sushi one of your top options. You will not be disappointed.

The Gyoza ($6) was good. The Deep Fried Calamari ($12.50) was okay. I don’t recommend the Tuna Poke ($13). It was a big disappointment. The chips that came with the tuna poke were corn tortilla chips, like the kind that would be more suited to being eaten with guacamole and salsa. They do not go well with tuna poke. I don’t think the Tuna Poke appetizer is worth $13. It’s a small appetizer, too. It would only feed one person. Or, maybe two people, if you’re willing to eat a very small amount. Unfortunately, I couldn’t eat the Chicken Skewers that were part of my Bento Box, because the chicken were seasoned with a lot of black pepper. I don’t recall yakitori normally having copious amounts of black pepper. Plus, there wasn’t a lot of sauce on the skewers. I gave the Chicken Skewers to my sister and my father. They’re not allergic to black pepper, like I am.

Food was great, we tried Japanese beef Ramen and the two spoon uni as well as the rainbow roll all three were extremely good we ordered the ramen second to highest spicy level and it was really good at that level if you can handle spice. Only reason I give it 4 stars is because of the fact that we were the only two people eating inside the restaurant and service was ridiculously slow they had only one girl manning tables and to-go orders and they were slammed with to-go orders it seemed like she was more concerned with those than being attentive with us but we got our food pretty quickly and it was good so I might comeback if we're ever here again.

This place is awesome for sushi and ramen lovers. First thing the waitress asks you is do you have a coupon. They will then outline all of the deals and promos they have out there. We came with a Groupon. We ordered the Tan Tan ramen, F sushi/ sashimi special, Maguro, Hama toro, Sake toro and Sake sashimi. I'm really picky with my ramen. But DJ's was delicious! You get a lightly spiced ramen with an egg, Chashu, corn and small pieces of beef. All of the sushi and sashimi tasted fresh. We loved the toro because of the fatty flavor. I like how this place has all types of Yelp, Groupon and happy hour specials. I'll be back to try some of their sushi rolls and other...
