Lost Coast Outfitters — Local services in San Francisco

Thank goodness for George and the founders of Lost Coast Outfitters. There is so much to love about this store, it’s hard to squeeze it all into one review, but here are a few highlights:

1. I am a flyfisherwoman. In my 20 years of fly fishing, this was THE FIRST fly shop where I felt completely at home and comfortable, with zero weird/getting hit on/mansplaining experiences and all the gear I needed to fit my petite 5’3” frame.
2. George helped me find everything on my list and gave me specialized and expert recommendations for the areas where I fish, taking the time to set up the guards on my sunglasses and get everything packed away in my new Patagonia bag. It’s clear these guys really know what they’re talking about and they aren’t going to sell you something just because they can. In several instances, they encouraged me to buy something not in the store because it made more sense.
3. The store dog, Diesel, is an absolute delight. Don’t miss him!
4. The chatter in the store was great fun, too. I found a few new streams I hadn’t tried just by spending an hour or so in there with other patrons on a Monday afternoon.
5. Prices were extremely reasonable and comparable to what you’d find online, and I’d much prefer to support this small business than give my money to Amazon.

Despite the expensive digs and gorgeous manicured retail layout, this shop is all about real usable advice and gear. From traditional to new age thinking, George and his team have found a great balance between attracting younger newcomers while still catering to the stubborn old timers.

You can likely find plenty of the gear here on sale somewhere else, but besides the endorphins you get from supporting a local non-chain business, you get real actual live in person support from people who care.

Lost Coast has never tried to upsell me and has always been very conscious of my budget, although it's pretty easy to spend a couple grand in a visit.

Lost Coast Outfitters is a fly-fishing shop located on Jackson Street, San Francisco. A beautiful little gem, warmly lit, with delightful ambience, and run by super-knowledgeable people who are expert fly-fishermen in their own right. When I last went there, it was a dull, dreary day, and the warm light from inside this charming store spilled out to the sidewalk in contrast to the grey concrete buildings surrounding it.
