BLUF: Solid chinese food where what dish you order matters.
I happily ordered take out from here several times when living close by. I called ahead with my order every time and had smooth experiences with that. I would happily order take out from here again.
Not all their dishes are created equal. Dishes that I always ordered: Spicy Boiled Fish, Water Chestnut Veggie Stir Fry. Dishes that I sometimes ordered and would order again: Ma Po Tofu, Dry Braised String Bean, Broccoli with Garlic Sauce, Mongolian Beef, XLB, Cha Siu Bao, Green Onion Pancake.
I see a lot of reviews complaining about the service. In my experience, the lady who runs the place was always just nice enough. Some days she was a bit short. She is not as nice as I would expect from a western restaurant in this sort of upscale neighborhood, but she is much nicer than the authentic restaurants in Chinatown. I think this place is an authentic Hunan Chinese restaurant underneath a veneer of whitewashing. I enjoyed ordering from here looking for the 'authentic' dishes. Read moreHouse of Hunan is a family run restaurant serving traditional Chinese dishes. This is not a fancy place but it offers good food in a nice and clean setting. Chicken dumplings with Szechuan sauce and Onion Pancakes are savory starters. We also tried soup, different fried rice and noodles along with Basil Chicken and they were excellent. Thai milk tea was disappointing though. The service is super efficient and helpful although it will lack basic courtesy since the owner is not a native English speaker. The restaurant always seems empty since it looks like most of the people order online. There is plenty of street parking available nearby. Park on the side of South Beach Marina Apartments leasing office side since the street parking is free over there. Overall this is a decent place to dine when you just need to fill up your tummy and don't care about great...
Read moreStandard issue Americanized Chinese food for those filthy Americans like me who occasionally want an MSG fix and a guilty pleasure. The interior and the service are exactly what you expect from such an establishment: textbook mediocre, which doesn't stop me.They have some dim sum and decent soups, nothing fancy, but definitely hit the spot for those who have a weakness for grease in a box. The prices are not as cheap, a reflection of the neighborhood. If you want to step up your game and your price go out to West San Francisco and find yourself a nice sitdown Chinese seafood place, or hit Chinatown for a savage...
