My go to legit Chinese spot - good prices, excellent food! Have been before many times with family and friends, can accommodate groups of all sizes.
FOOD: This is a Hunan place - the food from the region is numbing spicy and that is their specialty, so many options are that flavor - It’s not burning hot, just a tingling feeling!
That being said, I have taken several timid friends and had plenty of delicious non-spicy items as well.
Also have a vegetarian menu in the back of the menu, a decent selection of veggie/tofu options and some dishes that can be customized to be veggie. (Some vegetables in the vegetable section are stir fried with meat for flavor, definitely check before you order).
ORDERING - If you have a Chinese speaking friend to go with that will certainly unlock the smoothest ordering, especially if you have dietary restrictions (I speak Chinese).
But the menu is huge and has great translations AND clear photos (not that common!) so you can still order just fine as a non-Chinese speaker. I encourage you to go beyond what you’re used to and try something new. Food is all family style and should be shared.
They also have menu sets in the back that are customized to different flavor profiles also (e.g. mandarin that veers sweeter American Chinese, gourmet menu for classic American Chinese, Hunan for spicy authentic dishes from the region). It’s a nice touch if you feel hesitant to order and they also recommend the number of dishes based on the number of people.
SERVICE/ATMOSPHERE - Exactly what you expect and what I prefer - no fussing, call over when needed for things like more water or utensils. Same with atmosphere, standard booths and tables.
QUALITY / VALUE:
For 8 people, we got 3 apps and 8 family style dishes. The food is amazing and comes out hot and fresh as it’s made.
Including rice for everyone. several beers and tip, the price was roughly $35pp and everyone was so full AND there were leftovers. In this current SF dinner climate that feels like a steal!
This is my FAVORITE old-school type of Chinese place that I grew up going to. They have great regional Hunan food that I hope you try AND great American Chinese food too. I am so happy that they’re around to give you great food at a great price. Please...
Read moreThis is an average Chinese foods family owned business runs.. It combines of Hunan flavors & mainland Hot chill oil cooking & some schzewan spicy flavors2.. *we loved their hunan-cold-chicken & stir fry green beans.. but not their hot & sour soup.. *(too sour..extremely closed your eyes after 1 r2 taste, & also over season white pepper powder.. gave me a burning taste in my tummy..) *overall the hot & sour soup was over seasoning.. We also ordered the mapo-tofu.. I didn't like the taste of it2.. think it was over seasonings in some kind of Hunan spice.. tasted a little bitterness with 2much herbal spicy taste.. (we made that mapo-Tofu @home better),. Just want2 try how Hunan mapo-Tofu taste. . Saw others customers order other Hunan specialty plates & special-trays2,. But it's looks too oily.. 2much hot chilly-oilss 4us..so we skips those specialty orders.. they also have Hunan hotpot2.. (I recommend go2 a hotpot specialty restaurant,iPot in SF 5)
Don't order there or any regular Chinese restaurant. . Because they're not specialty in hotpot.. & give u very limited of meats & veggies.. & their quality usually not good & fresh as all u can eat buffet hotpots.. Overall, this Hunan house restaurant is ok.. foods to eat, services kinda slow.. because of family owned. . Saw only 6peoples there, but parent only help cleans & sets tables.. *should try Hunan *HOME(on Jackson st.), we likes that Hunan restaurant better.. better cooking & flavors &...
Read moreWe were craving for hotpot the entire trip and was very excited to find this place opened till 11pm. When we entered, we felt transported to oldern china as the decor was on point and we could hear guests and staff speaking in Chinese. Sadly, this is where our good experience ends.
Firstly, we ordered the hotpot. The soup was the saltiest soup I ever had. It was so salty that we literally felt a headache as we drank it.
Secondly, the service was horrendous. It was super difficult to get their attention for simple things like spoon and bowls (for the hotpot, duh!). Also, when I was ordering halfway, the staff just randomly walked away and later missed out half my order.
Thirdly, despite their google listing stating that they close at 11pm, at around 9.30pm they'll tell you that they are essentially closed and will refuse to serve you, despite you already dining halfway.
Oh and the table beside us were a bunch of mainland china tourists (I think) who were drinking beer and shouting non stop. Actually, they could be from Hunan. The staffs were also shouting at each other, it seems that this is the way they talk. This affected our experience as it was a very noisy and congested environment.
Lastly, although the quantities are great and price is cheap, the ingredients was of very, very inferior quality and did not taste good. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience and we will not...
