I was in San Francisco for a conference in January and Mellis Cafe happened to be near where the conference was. I decided to try it out and I'm so glad I did. I got sandwiches and the egg and cheese bagel two different days. I also tried their desserts. Their Turkish delight was probably the best I've eaten and I'm originally from Turkey. Their baklava was the best baklava I ate in the US only to be beaten by homemade baklava in my home country. I also tried two other desserts that I don't remember the names of and they were delicious as well. They get top scores on desserts. The egg bagel and sandwiches were good but I can't say they were great. The food came out pretty quickly every time though and that's an important plus for me. The price was also super reasonable. The only downside is they don't have much seating available. That wasn't an issue thankfully since not many people seem to be interested in sitting down. Most people just grabbed their food to go when I sat down one time to eat. Overall, I was satisfied with my experience and recommend them, especially if you want good baklava...
Read moreI came across Mellis Cafe after a trip to the Walgreen's on Powell Street. I saw a small crowd outside and checked out the reviews online and saw only 5s on all review websites and said I might as well give it a try. It is located across the street from the back entrance of these Parc 55 hotel. This is just an ordering counter and kitchen. There are 2 tables outside. This is strictly a to go location. There are several pastries, the chocolates croissant is the best I ever had. It is an explosion of chocolate. When it comes to the savory options (breakfast sandwiches, bagel sandwiches, etc), all food is fresh and made to order. All other coffee shops in the area (Alfred's, Starbucks, Pete's) have premade food that is warmed up. The egg and cheese bagel I had was very good. I had iced tea and it was very good and they use a biodegradable vegetable straw versus paper (game changer). The staff is all very friendly. I will be back, time...
Read moreI’ve been sampling and making my cheesecake since I was a little kid. I’ve just always loved cheesecake. I like the chocolate ones, I like the fruity ones, I like it straight up, I like different variations, like pumpkin pie or tiramisu. This place has the best cheesecake in San Francisco. I seriously don’t know how this hole in the wall at the edge of the Tenderloin is able to create such decadence. And yes, it’s technically in Union Square, but it’s the TL tried and true. Despite the devastating blight and despite being a Mecca for some of the most vile, most unredeemable, most pathetic humans to walk this planet, this historic, misunderstood district offers some of the best short order fare west of the...
