I came in to One Waan and ordered, and let them know I have a gluten and a soy allergy when ordering. When I got home, I was plating up my food, and realized that there was a big chunk of fried tofu on my plate! Fried tofu is soy, and is also not safe for a gluten allergy unless fried in a separate fryer from any items containing gluten. It was not listed on their menu as an ingredient in my order. I have celiac disease, so the fried tofu had cross-contaminated my entire plate, including my other food.
I contacted One Waan to let them know there was fried tofu in my order, and they were shockingly rude and argumentative about their mistake. I am a Black woman, look young, had just come from roller skating and was in street clothes--this was a racist micro aggression (honestly, a macroaggression).
They said there was no tofu in the order, then they said that the tofu was gluten free, then they said (angrily!) that no gluten free customers ever complained about the tofu--implying that I was lying about the issue. I was trying to explain that I have allergies, and that regardless of whether they think it's safe for people with celiac disease (it absolutely is not) I'm also allergic to soy, I told them that when I ordered, and tofu is soy.
Instead of owning their mistake and offering to make it right, they argued with me and subjected me to racism. After at first saying there was no tofu in my order, they later said there is always tofu in this food, anywhere you ever go there will be tofu in it--which is both a lie and also for some reason they were acting like I've never had Thai food before. Baby, WHAT? I speak 4 languages, went to an ivy league college, and ordered $70 worth of food because I wanted a lil snack. Miss me with acting like I'M the uninformed one in this interaction. Y'all are the ones who served tofu to someone who can't have SOY.
When they finally said they would remake it, I said, Okay, thank you for remaking it for me--and they HUNG UP ON ME.
The neighborhood One Waan is in is not always friendly to Black people, and apparently One Waan is no exception. Their whole response was unprofessional, rude, and ridiculous. They made a mistake that could have made me VERY sick, and acted like I was trying to get free food out of it. They ultimately remade my food, but not after making me wade through racism--I would say that trade off is NOT a fair one. I wish I had just asked for a refund because even my remade food was filled with half bean sprouts.
I'm disgusted by the way the folks here acted. They were nice to my face when I came back to pick up the remade food, but that doesn't hide the racism in their assumptions and their treatment of me on the phone. Honestly, it makes it worse--it shows me they knew better and could have done better, and they still CHOSE to treat...
Read moreThis has become my go-to for delicious Thai food, lovely ambiance, and friendly service (I am really surprised about the one or two low reviews: that is my opposite experience as a customer..and I have never seen this restaurant dirty as mentioned- it's always spotless and super clean). The owner, Alex and his team Nelson and Sunny are so nice, helpful, and accommodating. I always feel welcome there.
I enjoy bringing friends and business associates to One Waan Thai for the tasty curries and noodles, beautiful presentation and excellent service. Their ingredients are very fresh, unlike many restaurants that use pre-made or frozen ingredients, and the spices are in just the right amount and balance (not too salty, hot or sweet).
I especially love their: Crispy veggie rolls - Crunchy, dipped in sweet chili sauce. Pad Siew - delicious and tender noodles (hand kneaded). Tom Yum soup with rice noodles- tangy and spicy, great on cold nights. Grilled salmon with noodles -omg, love their wasabi-tinged sauce with this salmon. Any curry, especially their beef and chicken curries: yum!

Read moreThis place really punches above it's weight! While it's a great neighborhood spot, it really offers flavors and dishes that would give more upscale restaurants a run for their money. We got turned on to this place by our neighbors, and now recommend it to everyone!
First, the atmosphere is great, the place is really well decorated and has a warm modern touch. The service here is also very friendly and welcoming.
In terms of food, I love that the menu is more interesting than the typical Thai restaurants around. They have some interesting dishes that I don't typically see everywhere. Their flavors are fantastic, and the plating and presentation is really outstanding and almost unexpected!
From the menu, we liked these appetizers which were all great: corn cake thai samosas mango salad
We also enjoyed the One Waan Khao Soi, which is a flavorful dish that comes with Udon noodles and has some nice complex flavors.
This is now becoming our go-to spot for Thai around the area, either for in-person or takeout. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and give it a try - you won't be...
