The food was ok. It didn't taste bad, but wasn't all that great. It took tio long for our order to be placed. When the food finally arrived I realized I ordered the incorrect plate. We were 6 in our party. I apologized for ordering the incorrect plate and told them, we would keep and pay for the incorrect order. But I wanted to place the correct order. The lady took my order. An hour later I was still waiting for my order. We ended up paying for the entire order. And I continued to wait because the server said it was coming right out. Then after my party was waiting in our van, I asked again about my food. The server went to the kitchen to check and said to me that they had just started my food and it would be "only" another 10-15 wait. By that time I lost my patience and didn't even request a refund. I just left very disappointed with the service and not really e joying the quality or taste of the appetizers. We will not go back or recommended anyone to come here.

We ordered asado (meat was tough) We ordered grilled chicken (it was ok) We ordered a steak and what came out was some type of beaten up looking steak that looked like a large piece of ground beef. We ordered an appetizer with mixed of Puerto Rican bites (all fried foods and tasted ok) We ordered The Lobster Tail , which was the best tasting plate.

I hope this will help someone avoid a...

Avoid This Place at All Costs

The moment you walk in, you're hit with the overwhelming smell of bleach mixed with old grease — not exactly appetizing. I got a headache almost immediately.

The place is filthy, overrun with cockroaches, and far from clean. The food is mediocre at best and definitely overpriced for what you get.

The service and atmosphere are downright hostile. The owner yelled at me across the restaurant just because I asked to order scrambled eggs — apparently, they don’t serve eggs until 7 a.m. While I understand the policy, the way it was handled was rude and uncalled for.

To make matters worse, I believe I was outright scammed. I ended up ordering two bottles of water and paid with a \

10 bill. The waitress, who had bleach-blonde hair, gave me only \\

5 in change. When I asked for a receipt, she started acting suspicious and claimed she couldn’t reprint it. When I asked how much each bottle cost, she vaguely replied, “It’s like \$4.80 something,” then walked away. It was obvious she was lying and keeping the extra money. The gaslighting was next-level.

This behavior fits the pattern of other one-star reviews mentioning overcharging and double-tipping scams.

Stay far away from this place. It...

Steak mofongo was dry and somewhat bland, side "salad" was pathetic, consisting of a little shredded iceberg lettuce and literally one half of one slice of tomato. Like seriously just don't give a side at that point lol. Service was fine enough, I don't speak Spanish and none of the staff spoke English, but I don't feel like they were particularly rude or anything and it didn't take too long. Kind of oldschool diner type setting but many of the empty tables were left filthy with much of the service staff kind of just standing around not doing anything on a slow night. I dunno, it wasn't the worst, but I certainly wouldn't go here again when I could just go... anywhere else, really. Find it strange that the owner of a really highly rated place where the kitchen was closed recommended me to go here, maybe it used to be good? Was quite expensive for what it was, but I read some of the reviews while I was waiting for my food and a lot of the butthurt 1 star reviews were complaining that they add a gratuity and still expect a tip on top; this was not the case for me, the woman who helped me skipped the tip on the little card terminal before it was even handed to me, which I...

The food was over salted and unflavorful, and the chicken on my mofongo was hard and chewy. The food was so bad that i didn’t finish it and didn’t take it to go. The flan was also grainy and I didnt finish that either. There were only 4 of us and the waitress added auto-gratuity, which was not stated anywhere on the menu. When I asked the waitress why they added gratuity before I had a chance to tip, she said that the computer includes gratuity for parties over 3 people (which was a lie, because the first check that the other waitress bought us — before i had a chance to order dessert — did not have gratuity included. After i added dessert, she brought out a new check that included $24 of gratuity) She also clearly seemed unhappy to serve us, but was friendly with other customers. I couldn’t help but assume it’s because I’m a tourist. I work in the service industry and I always make it a point to be a pleasant customer and an excellent tipper. If the service was good, i wouldn’t have bothered leaving a review about the food. But the service was egregious. Don’t waste your time or money with this place.

Our waiter was very nice! Drinks were strong! Food was okay and a little pricy. I’d go back but only for the drinks.

Ruben’s Cafe is one of the few restaurants I tried while in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and it truly stands out. The food is amazing! I had mofongo with carne frita (fried pork) and arroz mamposteao, which were all deliciously prepared and bursting with authentic flavors. For my drink, I enjoyed a morir sonando, a delightful blend of orange juice and milk with sugar, topped with cinnamon. It was refreshing and perfectly complemented my meal. The service was exceptional, with attentive and friendly staff making the dining experience even more enjoyable. Another great perk is that they’re open 24/7, making it a convenient spot no matter the time of day. I will definitely stop by Ruben’s Cafe the next time I’m in Puerto Rico. Highly recommended!
