Jan's place is the current thesis presentation of a couple worldly individuals who have brought what they've learned to the city of San Luis Obispo as a gift. -- that sounds nauseatingly pretentious.... perfect.
Jeff is the master of all things audio, wine, beer and vibe. If you take the time to let him bend your ear, he has a dizzying life story that will take you to a lot of interesting places. He's always interested in your story so come correct.
The vibe is a small neighborhood bar, low capacity, like something you'd see in Tokyo but also reminds me of some of the amazingly quirky places in Memphis around the Train Station or the Crosstown Concourse. Jan's is the "I know a place" place. The lighting is ideal, the music is going though high end audio equipment/loud speakers but always at the perfect volume, no one is screaming to be heard. High end turntables at the bar, vinyl and mood lighting grace the walls. Always interesting conversations, the beer and wine are perfect. The rare early birds can experience an exceptionally good coffee here.
Jan's Place is surrounded by institutions that have all survived for well over a decade in what amounts to my favorite enclave just outside of downtown San Luis Obispo, by the train station. Parking is free and abundant. It's a perfect place to meet someone new, bring a few friends before dinner or have an intimate conversation. There is a wisdom to the place that feels like it belongs in a much, much larger city -- it's the exact type of place I miss from living in bigger cities but we have it here. May Jan's Place survive for generations to...
Read moreMy wife and I dropped in yesterday afternoon for the Shindig Cider Maker Selections event and it was a blast. We had heard lots of good word of mouth about this vinyl bar since the new ownership team took over (never were able to make it in under previous group) and had been meaning to drop in for awhile.
We're so glad we finally did! The spot itself has such an eclectic and charismatic setting for locals to hang out and have some drinks + listen to music at. I was impressed with the vinyl collection they had and really appreciated the attention to detail on the ambiance they've established. It's unlike anywhere else on this side of SLO and in a good way.
We had the pleasure of meeting the new owner who was extremely friendly to both of us from the jump and informed us of some fun events they'll be hosting this weekend and later this month. We look forward to coming back more in the future to hang out and enjoy some drinks (they had a fun variety of locally sourced options)...
Read moreFinally had the chance to visit Jan's Place in San Luis Obispo. Went with a friend and what a cool, chill place to go to grab a drink and here some awesome vinyl on the turntable. Food menu is a little eclectic and focuses on tinned fishes and pate style snack. Im not a big fan of fish although the menu offerings did seem paired well together. Place kinda had a Tokyo feel to it and and awesome little tucked away lounge seating towards the back if you wanted a more intimate experience and not join in on the conversations upfront. Definitely recommend checking it out for the vinyl...
