I stayed in SLO a few months ago and experienced horrible customer service at International House SLO down the street. They had told me my card was declining, and I had 24 hours to change my card information. Since my check-in was in a few hours anyway, I waited until I arrived to pay with a new card. When I got there (right on time according to my check-in window), a very unprofessional lady watching Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares blatantly ignored the door. She finally answered after I called her cell phone number. International House SLO never answered the several times that I called them that day, and it wasn't until I got there that the lady said she gave away my room. After my bank clarified that my card was actually not showing any declines or attempted charges at all, I knew this business was run by a bunch of liars. Unbelievable that they give away spots and make false excuses. I came down a couple of blocks to Hostel Obispo after being kicked to the curb, and the man in there was extremely kind and sympathetic. He let me borrow his phone charger and tried to the best of his ability to find me a spot in his hostel that he knew was already fully booked. Hostel Obispo and International House SLO don't even compare. If you want a very pleasant stay, I highly suggest Hostel Obispo over International House SLO 10000%. You receive a very high quality stay at Hostel Obispo with very friendly staff and without the sleaziness and unprofessionalism of International House SLO. I am very grateful for the man that helped me that night, this business truly does care about the well-being of the customer. International House SLO clearly only cares about the money, which explains why they constantly give up people's rooms without explanation (I'm not the only one this has happened to) and tried to leave me on...

Hello, I recently stayed at Hostel Obispo in San Luis Obispo, everyone that worked there was mainly white and I'm a person of color being Mexican, on the first day everyone was staring at me, looking extremely paranoid about me for no reason likely because I'm a man and brown because their is no other clear reason besides blatant sexism and racism, this white lady was ignoring me the whole time I was there, all staff were asking me pointless questions a lot to irritate me, the main issue was with the a guy named Christopher and the owner, I asked Christopher about something because I thought something happened in the bathroom that got me dirty and when I asked "can I talk to you?" He was being extremely rude and controlling to me speaking to me in a very dismissive and aggressive tone for no reason, later I was laying on the couch and Christopher started acting aggressive near me with being loud etc as a clear indication he's bothered by me, he then picked up his stuff from the couch aggressively and it shook my body around and when I looked at him to signal "why did you do that" he told me something rude and controlling so I confronted him and he didn't want to apologize and was being very controlling afterwards as a way to get back at me, I called the owner Jared and asked for a refund and Jared made me leave at 9 in the morning when checkout is 11 because Jared doesn't like me either for no reason. In conclusion everyone there is obviously weird and discriminates against brown men for no reason, this place shouldn't be running, they want your money and then want to psychologically abuse you afterwards...
Read moreThis is the first "Hostel" at which I have ever stayed at the recommendation of a relative regarding her using hostels whenever possible while traveling in both the U.S. and abroad too.
I have so not been disappointed and feel fortunate that Hostel Obispo is my first experience! As a result, I joined the Hostel Association too...
The location is perfect being in a really nice quiet old historical neighborhood, both walking or excellent public transit distance to everything in the City of San Luis Obispo and the entire San Luis Obispo County too.
I also found the accommodations to be superb in so many ways with a staff, especially a very nice lady name "Allie", who puts one at ease with a feeling as though you back home as a kid with your Parents and Siblings. The amazing thing is her being like a big sister looking out for your best interests!
I found the bunk bed really comfortable and clean with even extra blankets available too. Also, I was given a clean towel each night and the bathrooms we're impeccable just like the bedrooms and rest of the house.
I also really appreciated the delicious homemade pancake batter, butter, spices and syrup to make my own and plenty of fresh hot coffee each morning too! Wonderful in every way!
I am so going to recommend this wonderful place to any and everyone looking for the true historical peace and serinity which my knowing as a long time local, who was away, but has now returned--is fading fast in San Luis Obispo, but most fortunately is still alive and well at Hostel Obispo! A true blessing!
Than you so very much Good People of...
