Having been by a few times to hit the movie theater, we decided to try it for my birthday. The host wasn't rude, but was far from friendly. The waitress was very kind and attentive. The bread and spread was good. We both liked the salad (can't recall the name, but the variety with candied walnuts, apple slices, and cheese). I ordered the NY Strip, and found it to be properly cooked, but overall the steak was underwhelming. My wife ordered the tenderloin, and it was undercooked; she asked for medium and it came out somewhere between rare and medium rare. Neither of us were a fan of the sauce trio; a well prepared steak should not require any sauce at all; but if you're going to offer it, it should compliment the streak, not overpower it.
As far as the atmosphere and service, our waitress was attentive and timely. We never had to worry about empty glasses and she was nice. I feel like the atmosphere is a little....well, not sure how to put it, but I feel like it's a steakhouse for foodies. That's not necessarily a bad thing and isn't intended to be a put down; different strokes. The feel is a little on the trendy/hipster end of things and that's not really my style.
Other thoughts: I was rather disappointed in the meat selections for a steakhouse. Four beef cuts isn't horrible, but not having size options is a setback. It's nice having at least two size options for various steaks. If they had an 8 oz or larger tenderloin, I probably would have gone with that instead. I was also disappointed in the lack of classic steakhouse staples (like a simple baked or mashed potato); it seemed they wanted to try and reinvent the wheel when it comes to a steakhouse and for me personally, it fell flat.
Overall, I wouldn't discourage anyone from trying Hoof and Vine; just know what you are getting. For me personally, for the same money, I'd rather visit Carvers or for a little more go to Prime Streakhouse in Park City or...
Read moreI really wanted to like this restaurant, but it's just ok. The food wasn't bad, but it also wasn't memorable. I think everything was a bit bland, tbh.
We ordered 3 appetizers: artichoke, brussel sprouts, and Mac and cheese. The first two were fine. I wish the brussel sprouts were crispier, but the flavor was good. The artichokes were halved and a doused in butter and parm. A good combo! It was cooked perfectly. The mac... well, it was very bland. I should have asked for some table salt sooner.
I had the house salad, that was also pretty good. I wish I finished the dish because the entree left much to be desired. Well, the elk was fine, but I wasn't a fan of the sauce it came with. The extra sauce the server gave me were ok too, but I defaulted back to the normal way I eat steak- lemon and salt. Maybe they were too rich or sweet? I'm not sure, but I'm glad he gave me the options. The entree came with mashed potatoes, some sweet stuff, and green beans. I wasn't really a fan of any of it, but ate the green beans.
Oh godddd, my buddy got the ahi tuna and it was kind of terrible, lol. We tried each other's dishes, and I understand why he refused to eat more than a couple bites. They layered the ahi slices with a THICK coating of sesame seeds. That's all you could really taste! I'm no sesame seed hater but this... it was way too much. "Excuse me sir, would you like a side of ahi with your sesame seeds?"
Anyways, the creme brulee was really good. The server was also very attentive and kind. It was the food that killed it for me, I don't think I'll be going back. I enjoy the food more at Texas Roadhouse and it's much cheaper. It's a shame because I'm a huge fan of their sister...
Read moreWe celebrated a birthday at Hoof & Vine and had a wonderful meal. First off, I was slightly obsessed with the compound butter they serve there (and at their sister restaurant, Tiburon) and was curious to know what was in it (butter, honey, balsamic vinegar, red bell pepper, shallots, and basil—in case you were wondering). Besides the bread and butter, we ordered the Brussels Sprouts, Grilled Artichoke, and Mac 'N Cheese starters. The sprouts were tossed in parmesan and were sprinkled with bacon and a balsamic reduction (you can see them in the corner of the photo of the "Tenderloin of Beef" entree)! I would highly recommend them if you like Brussels sprouts. I didn't try any of the artichoke but it looked good. Several of us got the Tenderloin of Beef (with red wine shallot herb compound butter on it) with a side of "Funeral Potatoes" and the Tiburon Salad (bayb mixed greens, roasted tomato basil balsamic emulsion, candied walnuts, fontina cheese, and Fuji apple slices). The steak was cooked and seasoned perfectly, the salad was delicious, but the funeral potatoes were just okay. Since we were celebrating, we ordered two desserts to share: The "Fried Bread Pudding" (challah, peaches, bourbon caramel, and brown sugar whipped cream) and "Leah's Carrot Cake"...based on the recommendations of our waiter...who was fabulous with his service. I gotta say, despite the restaurant touting the carrot cake, it tasted more like a (gingery)spice cake. The bread pudding was probably enjoyed a little more, but not the best I've ever eaten. The next time we go, I would load up on the appetizers and main dish/sides and...
