Fonda Lupita — Restaurant in Sanford

I was very disappointed in my experience here. I really wanted to like it but there was just so many things that didn't work. 1st- I looked at the to-go menu before arriving so I knew what to expect. however when I arrived at the restaurant there was only a chalkboard menu with zero prices and no description . All of the menu items where written in Spanish but lacked a description. I guess you are just supposed to guess what you will be getting with your food?

2nd- when I asked about the kids menu they told me they did not have one however the online menu stated they did in fact have one. Also when I asked about combination platters they told me this was not a possibility however once again looking online this very much was possible and it's on their to-go menu. This ended up costing me way more because each item was sold separately but once again no prices so I had no idea how much it cost.

3rd- not having prices on the menu is a big fail in my opinion especially in a small town like Sanford. It leaves a customer feeling uncomfortable wondering how much the prices are. I was also very surprised at how expensive everything was once my total was ranked up since I did look at the online menu. I spent $43 for two adults to eat two gorditas with a side of rice and two cheese quesadillas. That seems extremely expensive especially in this area. once again it may not seem as upsetting if I would have known how much I was going to be spending at the beginning of the process.

4th- The atmosphere was not welcoming especially considering it was a Mexican restaurant. You would have thought that it would have been a friendly warm welcome especially being in Sanford but it felt very cold and uninviting.

I’d heard so much about Fondita Lupita, but I’m glad that we finally made the 50min trip there!! We ordered a feast and we were truly satisfied with the food, the atmosphere, and the service. To get the negative out of the way, the margaritas (we ordered an original and a strawberry Basil) were pretty weak. The flavors were very good but not much alcohol for the price tag.

Now, on to the main event! We ordered a salsa verde carnitas Gordita (with rice and beans), 3 quesabirria tacos, one each of the pork and chicken tamales (not much meat in either, but great flavors in the masa and filling), 1 al pastor taco, 2 carne asada tacos, one salsa verde carnitas taco, a pollo asado taco, and a side of chips with queso and salsa.

Everything was delicious. The al pastor and the salsa verde carnitas Gordita were the best items of the entire order. Flavorful, delicious salsa to complement them, and great balance of spice. The rice and beans sides were literally mind blowing. The queso and salsa with fresh chips were perfectly seasoned and provided respites of richness and refreshing acid respectively. Best Mexican food I've had outside of friends' homes. Staff was wonderful, service was fast, and everything my husband and I orders was great. QuesaBirria combo was so tasty and the portion size was perfect--the consomme is to die for when enjoying this dish! Husband got carne asada tacos, beans, and a cheese only quesadilla and was super happy with everything. Now, the clincher that you don't always think is important but for me it is--the sauce/salsa roja actually had the perfect amount of heat and added that extra little kick I like to add to my beans and rice. Not that they needed it since they were good as is but since I'm not used to getting such good sides at any other Mexican restaurants I didn't realize it until I got a bite without the sauce/salsa.
