One star for current state, one for the memories. If you're still holding onto hope, the curry chili cheese fries is the last thing here to treat you right.
Have been ordering from Hurry Curry for over five years. Couldn't be beat at the start. Over the past year I've witnessed quality slipping. The chicken cutlet was my go-to. At it's height, the chicken was crispy, tender, and flavorful. The curry was equal parts of everything you want. These days the chicken is bland and soggy, the curry is thin and runny, the whole dish lacks the memorable punch.
Braised beef curry was a fallback, that has declined too. Fried Chicken "Karaage" and the white sauce was another shining star. Now when you order it, you're guaranteed to have 2-3 of your chicken pieces have tough cartilage taking up half of the bite.
When you to-go ordered extra ingredients in your curry they used to give you a larger curry cup. Made sense since potatoes, veggies, etc took up extra volume in the little cup. I've asked for larger cups many times when ordering extra ingredients, and it's always missed. These observations aren't based on one order, I've forgiven this store order after disappointing order.
Tonight I lost the last bit of hope. Placed a pickup order at 9:36p, within the time listed as open hours on the order site (says 10p on the image attached). Arrived 10 minutes later to pickup, and they say the kitchen is closed. The hours posted on the door say they close at 9pm. Seems like an easy fix to update their own site's hours, or close online orders after closing (placed order 36m after door hours), but alas, it took my order, gave no notice that the place was closed. Talk to the guy up front, he punches buttons on the to-go order tablet, spins it around to show me my order has been canceled. Weird but whatevs. Walk outside, pull out my phone before the drive home, and email notice of cancellation arrived 1 min prior. Turns out the guy up front cancelled the order to my face and played it off as a glitch? I realize the kitchen is closed and I'm not going to get my order, all he had to do was just cop up to the mistake.
So that's the deal. Gives me no pleasure to say; Too many other great options in town, and too much crazy traffic on sawtelle to keep sending orders for slipping quality and...
Read moreCame to this location quite a while ago. Curry House across the street is always crowded so this was the next best thing. Wasn't my choice but since I had never been here before, let's do it. Anytime I hear curry and it's Japanese, it has to be the pork cutlet unless I can get beef. My mouth is watering just thinking about the thick gravy that's going to smother the cutlet and the rice and the plate in general.
You can choose your spice level but I remember when I came here at the time, I was more afraid of too much heat and cannot enjoy this meal. I asked for mild but it was still a barn burner for me. The curry was really thin soup like but not watery. I had always imagine Japanese curry to be like the gravy on biscuits and gravy thick. It's not bad but I had more than higher expectations. It's not because I had only been here once for me to say this is a miss because I'm not willing to try it again. I visited the Pasadena location which was exactly the same experience. Which I will write a separate review for that one.
During the summer which is when we came here, there is outdoor seating. Always enjoy that about any place so hope they still do that in the cold months. Warm plate of curry to keep warm. Now I want curry for dinner. Nothing like writing a review to build up...
Read moreIn the past I didn't think I would every have anything bad to say about this place. I showed up ten minutes before 11:00am and asked if I could possibly put in a to-go order even though they weren't technically open. I was rudely told no they still have stuff to prep in the kitchen (it wasn't rude that they told me they still had to prep but the manor in which I was told was rude, however you cannot recreate that over typed words). I thought okay that's fine I'll wait. I got the tofu curry, order came out in about ten minutes. It was no more than five minutes after getting my food that I started eating. First of all it was almost entirely tofu, there was barely any curry and as far as I could tell they don't do anything to the tofu, I could have bought that tofu at the store for way cheaper and mixed it in myself. I come to a curry house for curry! Secondly the food was cold, all of it was cold! The rice was very dry seemed like could have been left from yesterday, the tofu was stone cold! It was disgusting. If they were going to serve me old cold food why were they so rude about "we still have more prep to do". I will not be returning here again and I strongly recommend if you find yourself in this area go right across the street to...
