this delicious spot goes down as our find of the year. Such a great surprise. We found ourselves in the area, looking for a spot to stretch our legs while on the road and Google brought us to Watercolor. After a lovely walk around the park and the village, it was time for lunch. We had previously attempted to search out a place nearby to find good Southern biscuits without success. So that’s what we decided to look for today. And amazingly, we found Scratch 250 feet away! We entered to find a small town beachy vibe, indoor and patio dining, and a menu of enticing options that included dishes beyond just biscuits. The prices are extremely reasonable based on our two weeks on the road. The Lunch Box deal seems like a screaming deal. Scratch also serves alcohol should you be in the mood for a festive brunch. The biscuits here are a bit different than many southern style biscuits we have enjoyed in the past. Baked square, lighter and fluffier than some of the denser types from say the Carolinas or Georgia. Lightly crisp on the outside and soft in the inside. Marvelous.
After perusing the menu (and watching a delicious looking order of the Griddle Cakes go by), my DW chose the Arugula Salad with Strawberries, Tomatoes, and Candied Pecans with a biscuit on the side. My choice was the Biscuit and Gravy with sausage patty. I tried to overcomplicate it by asking for the sausage and the gravy on one side of the biscuit so as to be able to try half with some butter or jam but the very personable Michelle just said they would put the gravy on the side and let me do things my own way. Brilliant. The biscuits, while a bit on the crumbly side, were divine. Whether with Honey Butter, Strawberry Jam, or warm Sausage Gravy we loved every bite. The salad came with Honey Balsamic dressing that was excellent with the berries and nuts. My biscuit held up well under the thick gravy. And the sausage they use here is very tasty also.
Michele came over to our table to check and see that we were happy and we enjoyed a nice conversation about the business, our travels this trip, and her history of finding her way to Watercolor. She and the other young lady working on our visit were both the kind of folks it’s a pleasure to find providing customer service these days. If you are anywhere near the area, check out the village and definitely make time to enjoy what Scratch Biscuit Kitchen...
Read moreOur family visits 30A nearly every summer. We have some favorite brunch spots (Chanticleer, Crackings & Perfect Pig) but also like to try new spots each year. Today is our first time at Scratch Biscuit Kitchen. Tropical Storm Fred is expected to make his appearance today, and many restaurants have shut down, so I’ll start by saying we truly appreciate this establishment being opened today! In spite of being short staffed, as most other places are due to Covid, the employees were all friendly. They were really busy, so we had to clean off a table with spray & a rag that was set out on the trash cans since no one seemed to be working the dining room. The food was average and coffee was extremely weak. We are a family of 6, so a wide variety of options were ordered. The hash brown casserole was yummy enough to go back for seconds. I’m including a photo of the Deep South biscuit sandwich. I was disappointed in the quantity of fillings. It was lacking and could’ve benefitted from larger fried green tomatoes, more than 1/2 a slice of bacon, or perhaps...
Read moreThis place looked so pleasant from the outside and decor, but the food was terrible and the young woman who took our order seemed irritated about even being there. We were the only customers in the restaurant.
The "scratch bacon" was just pre-cooked bacon that was being scooped onto the grill in heaps, and was completely flavorless. It tasted and felt like chewing on old shoe leather.
The "fresh" coffee (we got there when the place opened) tasted like it had been brewed the previous day, sat overnight, and was just reheated.
The hash brown casserole looked all smooshed and grease-saturated, as if it had been sitting at the bottom of a pile for hours and was then microwaved.
Overall just a miserable breakfast experience, which was surprising because it looked like such a nice place and had many...
