I want to preface what I’m about to say by highlighting that the staff was awesome. Super friendly, hard working, very attentive. They clearly care about their work- nothing negative to say about them.
With that said, the food here is absurdly priced given its mediocre quality. I mean $15 for 2 eggs with some toast and potatoes? Even with inflation that’s wild…
The portion sizes are very generous though, so I suppose you could say you’re paying for 2 meals if you end up taking half of it home (as I’m sure most of their customers do) but to be crystal clear, you are paying for quantity, not quality.
I would stack this place up against Dennys or IHOP in terms of flavor. Not bad, definitely edible, but not nearly worth what they’re charging.
There’s definitely something to be said for paying more to support a small business but there are other family owned breakfast places - some literally a few blocks away - where you can get the same or better food for a far lower price.
I got the biscuits and gravy, which came with 2 eggs and some hash browns. After tax it was over $20. The biscuits were flavorless and dense. The “sausage” gravy has no visible or tastable sausage in it, and there was barely enough to even top the biscuits… I ask you, when is the last time you got Biscuits and Gravy somewhere where the biscuits weren’t fully dredged and swimming in gravy? If you can still see biscuit when the plate comes, you’re being ripped off. If you finish the gravy before you finish the biscuits, you’re being ripped off.
My girlfriend ordered a breakfast burrito and was equally unimpressed. For 2 of us, No coffee or drinks other than water, no sides or substitutions, it was over $40.
To add insult to injury we had to wait 30 min to eat ihop quality food at 5 star hotel prices.
I get the impression this place kind of caters to wealthy Rincon Valley residents who are older, don’t really cook, maybe don’t really taste so well anymore, and just want a place to hang out and chat with the friendly staff.
If that’s you, great, enjoy it. Like I said, the staff is super friendly and attentive. But if you’re looking for an actual good breakfast at a fair price, go to Hanks, or even Denny’s/IHOP. You’ll pay far less and get food that’s as...
Read moreMy overall grade for Jeffrey's Hillside Cafe is: B-
I found the place in an article written in Sonoma Magazine about some of the best brunch places in Sonoma. Also, the chef came from John Ash, one of our favorites. The article mentioned: best chilaquiles we've had.
So, naturally, we went and I ordered the chilaquiles. They were a little disappointing. Fair warning - I'm born in Mexico and grew up eating Mexican food which is why I was so excited - but in the end - they didn't work. The salsa (which had a good flavor) was not enough, the portion size, just a bit small and they were just not very "traditional", but maybe Jeffrey is not going for traditional - fair enough. One thing that is really not good - the side of black beans. The beans were not Pinto beans which is super traditional and they are almost always re-fried. These were not either. Black beans in a cup - I tasted them, and they were not even seasoned. Very bland - Kitchen staff: taste your product for seasoning before sending it out the door. Wow.
Cheese blintzes were also ordered - very good and also, just a bit small portioned.
Breakfast burrito was also ordered - while the size was HUGE, the ratio of ingredients seemed to be lacking in the egg department. Again - black whole beans instead of refried beans - no bueno.
Next year, we will give it another shot and order just something like an omelette and see how it goes, but...
Read moreWent on a Sunday morning, we were seated at the bar which was nice. we were able to have our backs to the crowded dining area and we had fun watching The Food Network.
My issue was the price vs. what I was served. I ordered the French Toast and it was a special I think so not the French Toast on the main menu.
So I received my plate and cut into the toast to see that it was completely soaked through with syrup. so it was incredibly soggy! I have never had my French Toast presoaked before, I've always been given syrup on the side so I can control it so I thought it was common practice. I am not the biggest fan of syrup so I couldn't really eat it. It was no longer toast at all. I do not understand the appeal of a texture like that, like lumpy grainy syrup in "solid" form. The fruit was nice but bitter.
Now the sausage links were crazy tasty! THAT IS THE ONLY REASON THEY ARE GETTING 2 STARS.
Husband had the California Benedict and he thought it was average at best. He gets a Benedict everywhere we go and he said he regretted ordering it.
We paid a heavy price to learn that just because something appears to have quality, it's often only surface deep. Go here if you only care...
