Summary; Really good Asian flavors, portion sizes are fair, drinks (I had a couple lychee martinis) were excellent, and service was very good. Spice level on my dish was right in line with what you should expect for the noodle dish I had (Dan Dan noodles). Cucumber salad and Crab (not krab) rangoons were both excellent. I'd put this restaurant in a top 5 spot in Saugatuck/Douglas, and one that stands out from most of the other restaurants in town that largely serve up mostly American-inspired fare.
More; I made my way to Singapore Room on an early Friday evening. Dining room was almost full, but I was able to grab as spot at the bar. Bar staff were friendly and I quickly had a drink even with the demand from the dining area. Really good vibe to the place. Solid drink menu, and a good wine selection. Menu doesn't have an overwhelming number of options, but all the proteins, salads, rice and noodle dishes you'd expect to find in a pan-Asian restaurant are well represented. The Dan Dan Noodles were nicely cooked, and the serving had a healthy spice level. (five-spice and heat as you'd expect for Singapore inspired dishes) The pork mixed in with the noodles was moist and flavorful. I also had the crab rangoons and cucumber salad. Both were well prepared, and fresh. The crab rangoon has a really good crab flavor, but still not overpowering the cream cheese and crispy wonton.
A great start for what appears to be another really good dining and drink destination in Saugatuck...
Read moreOVERPRICED HORRIBLE SENSORY NIGHTMARE! I was just there last weekend for my birthday dinner, had a large group of 10 with a reservation. The waitress asked if I was the bachelorette (lol) and we laughed but then the rest of the meal showed how disorganized this place is. Waitress asked immediately how the checks would be split, which was a bit awkward to start a birthday dinner. She seemed surprised that we wanted to eat food at this restaurant, she did not bring us menus. Maybe it’s mostly just a bar? I don’t know and I will never go back to find out. The lights were all red, it was like being in a photo darkroom, except it was incredibly loud. I had to leave the restaurant for a while and go outside because it was so loud. The worst part was the food all came out at weird random times, not like all apps together then all mains. Being in a group of 10, people were trying to be polite and wait to eat, we asked the waitress and she said “it just comes out when it comes out” - isn’t time management part of being a professional chef/restaurant?! This made the meal take FOREVER, with some people being done before others got their food. The food was meh, some people really liked theirs, I ordered the “signature” chicken, it was basically popcorn chicken. The prices are INSANE for what they serve, and I’m not afraid to spend $$$ for good food. It was such an unfortunate birthday dinner. I will never go back and if you’re looking for more than drinks, I suggest go...
Read moreI had high hopes for this spot since I was really craving vegetable dumplings and it was the only place nearby that had them. Unfortunately, my experience was pretty disappointing.
When I arrived, it took a while for anyone to greet me — the main bartender seemed more focused on talking to friends. I was eventually seated at the bar, and even though they weren’t taking to-go orders, my waitress was kind enough to say she’d give me containers if I wanted to pack my food.
I ordered the vegetable dumplings, the chef’s special vegetables, and jasmine rice. The rice and dumplings came out first — the rice was unevenly cooked with some crunchy spots, and the dumplings were extremely salty. The vegetables came later, and they were also overwhelmingly salty. By the end, my tongue felt like I’d just eaten a jumbo movie theater popcorn.
As I was boxing my food to leave, the bartender finally acknowledged me, making a strange comment about “finding a workaround” so the chef wouldn’t find out — which left me feeling uncomfortable. On top of that, the slogan printed on the back of their shirts (“Too dark. Too spicy. Too loud.”) threw me off as a Black customer — if the owner isn’t a person of color, I’d seriously reconsider that branding.
Overall, I left feeling bummed to have spent $30 on an overly salty and mediocre meal. The only plus was finding something to eat without having to...
