Steak 'n Shake — Restaurant in Schererville

I normally like this Steak n Shake, but my expierance today was horrible. First we noticed that the parking lot was full so before waiting forever my husband ran in and asked how long the wait time would be. He was told ten minutes so he put in his name and came out to the car and let us know it was not a long wait. We did get seated very quickly and I excused myself to the washroom. It Was Filthy in there!!!! The toliets were gross the floors were gross, I was afraid to touch anything. Our server told us at least twice I will be with you in a moment and left to help someone else. Finally put our order in and we get out drinks. The server took it apon himself to not bring my child her drink because that's what he would do with his own child. She was begging for something to drink. We got there at 2:20, we did not get our food until 3:30. Not one person came by to let us know the kitchen was backed up. There is no way we would have waited that long with a two year old. My husband asked for bacon on his burger, he had to send it back because they did not put it on. His fries were cold. My brother asked for bacon on his sandwich, he got one tiny piece and had to ask for more. My burger was dripping with grease. I touched the bun and had to search for a napkin. My brother got a refill on his coffee which was filled with coffee grounds. We never did get silverware. We decided to get shakes to go at the end of our meal. I ordered a cookie dough shake and had to send it back because it was basically a vanilla shake with maybe a chunk or two of something that resembled cookie dough. By this time we asked to speak with a manager. He gave us $12 off our meal but then refused to take our coupons because he had already taken money off the bill. Went to steak ‘n Shake yesterday for my little babies 5th birthday and I was not very pleased. First, let me say that the staff was very friendly and the place was clean. That is not why I’m giving a low score. My problem is steak ‘n Shake new way of doing things. I basically spent about 30 to 40 minutes just trying to order the food, get the drinks, and pick it up to bring it to our table. They are now basically self serve, which does not go over well when you have a family of 6, including a toddler that likes to run around like toddlers do. Upon entering, you have to order at the front (which is a very small space) on their machines. You have to enter your whole order, so I found myself standing there for literally 30 minutes with my whole family trying to figure out what everybody wanted all of the specifics, shake options, all of that , with the help of one lady (who I actually feel bad for). After all of that was done I was able to pay at the kiosk and then drink tickets came up. This is a new method that I have never seen before and I do not like. There’s a QR code that you have to scan on the pop machine and it gives you 15 seconds to get a soda. 6 tickets! After the 15 seconds it locks up. And you also have to make sure you hold onto that small little paper in case you want a refill. Also I’m walking back-and-forth to the table 100 times to get my food and condiments. I couldnt tell which burger was which, they all looked the same looking at the top of the buns so that was very frustrating. Overall, the food was actually very good very well prepared but the hassle that I had to endure in order to dine in there was just too much. I will say if you are going for a Drive-through order that’s fine or if you have a very small group of people it may work out, but I will not visit this restaurant anymore for family dining its just too...

Terrible. Went there a few days ago just for fries. Drive thru was a little busy, but didn't wait super long. Went there today at 4:00. There were 4 vehicles in line ahead of me. Drive around the building to get in the back of the line. Sat for 5 minutes, no cars moved. Finally the two cars directly in front of me drove off. I pulled up and the car at the speaker apparently had been there a while and no one had taken their order yet. Finally they honked and someone took their order. So, the car in front of us pulled up and waited to place their order. In the meantime, more cars had pulled in and were wrapped around the building. The car in front of us asked if they still had a certain sandwich. Took a bit too long for the person inside to answer. When they were told yes, finally, they said they wanted in a meal. Then there was another pause and the person inside asked if they wanted fries with the sandwich? Well, no of course not. They did say the meal. Anyway, it was finally our turn (20 minutes had passed by then) and I said we wanted 4 milkshakes. Started to give the flavors and the lady inside says wait a minute. Another pause, then she says there was a wait for the shakes, it would take 20 minutes. 20 minutes??????? Isn't this place fast food? They wouldn't know fast if it bit them in the.... well you know. If the machine is down that is one thing, tell people up front. If it needs cleaning, that should be done during closed times. Ridiculous. When they said 20 minutes I said never mind and drove away. I have worked fast food, for 5 years and never did we give such poor service. That seems to be the going thing anymore. Nobody cares...
