Having grown up in a German-American home, and lived three times in Germany, I consider myself well-versed in German food. I recently was in the area and made a special effort to try this place out. I had been wanting too for a long time. There are many positives …and negatives. First the positives….it is in a nice area and the building is actually very nice. A small strip mall off the freeway. Outdoor seating adds to the European touch. Inside is what you would expect….beer glasses everywhere, dark wood, typical German decorations. Now, as kitschy as they are, I actually think they did a nice job. Nothing is dusty and dirty. Every horizontal surface has a collectible from Germany sitting on it. They have real German collectibles everywhere. I think the atmosphere is actually quite nice. The place was busy and that is always a good sign.music was soft and strange….classical music in a Rathskeller environment. Staff seemed friendly but overwhelmed. Nice bar to eat at if alone. Beer selection is very authentic. Glasses are authentic. I ordered a tall bier and they served it in a porcelain “Stein”. (In German we would call it a Krug, but here they call it a stein.) beer was great. Price of beer was quite high but I understand given the import of real German beer. That is where the positives stop. The bartender was in a huge hurry. She gave me less than a minute with the menu before asking “what will I be having?”. I hadnt even opened the menu up yet. I asked for Rouladen. Nope. Not on a weekday. (For those that don’t know, Rouladen is an absolute must In A German restaurant. ) so, because it is a weekday and Rouladen can’t be ordered, I ordered wiener schnitzel. Salad and “fried potatoes” as the bartender called them for a side. I was hurried through the menu by the frantic bartender and I hoped “fried potatoes” was going to be “Bratkartoffeln”. I’m still Not sure if I got Bratkartoffeln. The problem here is the food. Nothing was bad. But for the prices, I expect it to be great! It wasn’t. The side salad came out in record time and looked like half of it was missing. It was very !! Small. Field greens , four croutons, and possibly some cheese I believe. It did come with some bread and butter . Then the entree arrived. The plating is a disaster. They put two large schnitzels on a small plate and the fried potatoes on a dessert plate. Yes the side dish of potatoes came On a dish I would serve a slice of cake on. You have three plates in front of you. Salad, schnitzle, and what turns out to be more like hash browns than Bratkartoffeln. Oh and a fourth plate for the bread. The schnitzel was not authentic. Was it Bad? No. It was ok. It was not worth the money and it was not memorable. They either are not pounding the veal out enough or the cook is giving it wayyyyy too much breading.(wienerschnitzel should be light and very thin. It is a delicate dish.) It was clearly over cooked. Here is the main thing they forgot….schnitzel is dry without a sauce. Wienerschnitzel doesn’t come with a sauce but must!!!! Come with drawn butter. None to be found. Bartender is so busy elsewhere waiting to ask for butter is not advised. It was dry as it was over cooked and no butter to dip it in. Fried potatoes on a dessert plate lacked any flavor. I paid my bill and left. Sad. I want this place to shine but the prices require great food. Mediocre food at great prices won’t bring me back. The big test for me is….would I bring my German relatives here? For a drink maybe. For a nice dinner , not so sure.
