We’ve been patrons of this restaurant for 15+ years. It’s my mom’s favorite restaurant so that’s saying something, as she was born in the city of Madras (Chennai). This restaurant has changed various owners and staff, but it has consistently remained my family’s go to for vegetarian South Indian cuisine. We have tried other newer places, but none can really compare in the area. A nearby spot called Honest is a great alternative with similar offerings. However, we still prefer Madras Mantra, especially after I tried their food again yesterday (12.03.2020) after almost a year. Boy was it worth the wait! The taste blows all other spots away! Other alternatives taste plain in comparison to Madras Mantra. Whatever the current chef is doing is magic! (is it Ram-bhai??) chef’s kiss The dosa was great as always. The idly was soft and fluffy. I LOVE the 3 different chutneys you get with each dish (standard coconut chutney with a perfect tang, a spicy ginger chutney, and a spicier tomato chutney). I could drink this stuff! The sambhar (soup) was flavorful and had nice chunks of veggies. I could also drink this stuff lol. The kids loved the pongal since it’s not a spicy dish. We also ordered North-Indian items like chili paneer and pao bhaji. The pao bhaji was good before but it has dramatically improved. It had it’s own unique flavor, deliciously different from the usual comforting taste you find at my other favorites (e.g. Honest, Chai Pani). Just like you may have a favorite ramen spot, this is my favorite dosa and pao bhaji spot. I’m going to struggle controlling my cravings for this place. I can’t speak on the service, as it’s been a while dining in. But as with any venue - be a kind and decent human, politely ask for whatever you found lacking. Don’t be an a*e and shell out low scores to mom&pop businesses before giving them an opportunity to fix their shortcomings. Support local, especially if they’re serving mouth-watering food like...
Read moreWe frequently go to this restaurant and paid a visit a couple of days ago. They greeted us nicely. Quality of the food quality was up to the mark.
When we got the bill, the real fun started. The costs of all food items did not coordinate with the menu we were given at all. We inquired for a menu back and learned that the menu we were given was old while the price change already took place a while back.
Now, as a customer we were anticipating a reasonable decision from them to quote us for a cost we were given through the menu but the young lady didn't offer any stipend indeed in spite of the fact that it was totally their blame of giving us the menu with the ancient cost. Not as it were I was disappointed with the behavior , I was more baffled with the climb in cost. It was totally unnecessary and unjustifiable cost regardless of the food quality. Please do inquire for the proper menu, and compare it with the one of the best competitors of Madras Mantra, Name of the restaurant is HONEST on Church Street, Decatur. You may be shocked to see the prices are higher approximately $3-$4 on every food item than Honest where you'll get at least same or high quality food.
Firsr time we have experienced this most noticeably awful service and I will never visit this eatery and if the work morals will be same at that point their commerce will begin going...
Read moreDon’t get fooled by the reviews. I visited here on a Saturday on July 29th and the food and the whole experience was very bad, let me begin by saying the food options are very lack luster. I paid $17 per person for a weekend buffet to eat cabbage and potato vegetable !! There was a complete chaos, the floor was slippery all throughout and it was loud. The food lacked soup as the only major attraction in curries was paneer which was kept in a large tray and was very average in taste as well. The naans were raw and puri was dry. Food simply did not hold any standards to some great taste. Very ordinary food. Next was the chaos in restaurant, it was crowded as a lot of people fell prey like me to those reviews and hoped for a tasty food, but the air conditioner was not working on that day. And to add to that the door to area washing utensils was open all the time which was right next to the plates to grab for buffet and it was so loud that it was chaotic.
Sure some of these won’t be an issue for always, but the food should have held standards which wasn’t the case as well. I would not recommend this place for food, Infact you get much better food around for lesser price as...
