I walked into Dior's Jewelry in Shamrock Plaza about 3 pm on August 11 with an excellent (near mint) condition DUFA (Deutsche Uhrenfabrik) Tauchen Meca quartz watch. It's no OMEGA or Breitling but nonetheless, it's a $350 German watch known for quality. I have had this watch less than 2 years; it was lightly worn, and ran flawlessly. I only needed a new battery.
I should have immediately suspected a problem when the woman who changed the battery returned to the front and asked me if I could set the watch myself, "Because it's tight." I noticed that the crown felt strange but I set the watch and saw the second hand moving, so I didn't think to wait around in the store and see if everything was in order.
An hour later, I noticed that the watch had the wrong time (by several hours). Upon further examination, the hour hand was almost completely loose from the pinion. (If I rotate the watch, the hour hand will spin freely around the dial). A watch that was functioning perfectly now has a new battery but is damaged and can't be used.
I returned to the shop about 5 pm and of course, the woman who changed the battery denied any wrongdoing. She said that she only opened the watch and changed the battery. I knew it was a long shot that she would accept any responsibility. Well, she didn't. She even said that if they had to repair the watch, it would come out of her own pocket. (Should I feel bad about that, as the customer?) Bottom line: I knew that this watch was in perfect mechanical condition before she got her hands on it, but she did not want to be held responsible for the cost of repair.
My best guess is that she either turned the screw-down crown forcefully without having pulled it out the correct number of stops, or she was not careful when re-tightening the crown. Maybe the tool slipped while she was removing or tightening the case. I'll never know for sure. Result: I paid $15 for Dior's Jewelry to change a battery; now I have a broken $350 watch.
There was no attempt by this establishment to accept responsibility or address the situation. Presumably, they figure I won't be able to prove that the watch wasn't broken before I brought it to them.
Buyer beware: If you have a watch you value, think twice about bringing it to this jewelry store, even for a battery replacement. They do not have anyone qualified to service watches and you are taking the risk of walking out with a damaged watch, which you'll be stuck to deal with at your own expense.
Further, if this is their approach to customer service, I certainly would not trust this place for purchase or repair of any high...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis has to be the best gift shopping experience that I have every had. The two female employees were both patient and knowledgeable of their product and what I needed. There was no attempt to Upsell or Oversell. When I did not actually know what I wanted they were both involved with asking me questions to get a better idea of what I needed. In the end I felt that their assistance and suggestions were invaluable. I really appreciate Dior's Jewelers - Decatur. Thank you guys and with three daughters, a wife and a granddaughter, I am definitely going to see you...
