I’m Mexican, so I tend to be picky about Mexican food, even more since living in AZ because most of the cuisine here is Tex-mex or Sonoran which are my least favorite type of Mexican food, so it’s really hard to find something I like, but I’m always open to trying out new Mexican restaurants in the hopes of finding a decent one. I thought I’d try Checo’s for the first time and ordered their fish tacos.
Pros: The tacos were huge and the battered fish was extra crispy. Also, their roasted salsa is actually spicy and they have multiple salsa options.
Cons: They use ranch as their “crema”. That’s the first time I heard of putting ranch on a taco. I would assume it’s to appease the American palate. The pico de gallo didn’t seem to include jalapeño, salt or lime juice, and they use yellow cheese. I understand using yellow cheese on a Tex-mex dish, but yellow cheese on mariscos doesn’t pair well.
Maybe their specialty isn’t mariscos, even though they have a whole section of it on their menu, so I’m open to going back and trying something else next time. I also have zero complaints about...
Read moreAfter a long 5 hour drive from San Diego my family and I were in the mood for some Mexican food. Being from SD we can be a bit picky about our Mexican spots.
I looked around online and came across this place that looked a bit new due to the low reviews, but the menu online looked great.
We came in and the place was a bit outdated, but with a couple modern upgrades.
We ended up getting Birria tacos, an order of chips with some cheese and pico, and gorditas because we don’t really see those back home.
Let me tell you, this place delivered! The tacos were crispy and didn’t fall apart. The consomé was very flavorful and had a nice aromatic touch. We tried the gorditas with al pastor and carnitas and both were delicious. We tried the green and habanero sauce, and the chunky sauce was great to dip the chips.
The kid at the front was very friendly and attentive.
Place could use a little remodeling, but the good is great so we may make a stop on...
Read moreAll the prices displayed are lies. They don't tell you until you're charged if you look at your receipt. When asked why everything was so much more expensive they said, "oh we haven't updated our prices on the menu yet" oh sorry, you can't just lie like that
Edit: The manager's response is also a lie. There is an additional line item on the receipt that shows I didn't get a cash disount because I used a card. Some of the items I was charged for were over 30% more than listed. I went back to my picture of the menu (I'm likely to dispute the charge with the credit card), and nowhere did it say that there was additional fees for paying with card. No one ever said there was additional fees for paying with card, the employeed even heard me discussing the prices out loud and didn't say it would be any more expensive. Definitely scammy. Food isn't particularly...
