We normally love Sumo Maya and always have had such a great experience, except on New Year's Eve. We chose to go to Sumo Maya as our families were visiting and we have always had a great experience. We had friends coming and we requested for them to have our tables close together. The hostess on the phone said we can't promise anything but we will try. We were very appreciative of that. When we all arrived to the restaurant, we again just reminded them that our friends will be joining and would appreciate if we could sit in close proximity. The hostess was very sweet and kind about it. When our friends arrived (30 mins later as that is when their reservation was) we got up to greet them. We were suddenly very rudely approached by the general manager (Guillermo Gutierrez) who told us in a very rude tone to sit out and we are blocking the walkway. It was almost as if we had committed a crime. We apologized and sat down. We ignored the situation as we were there in New Year's Eve and wanted to have a good time with our family. A little bit later my husband asked very politely if we could combine our tables as the tables were right next to each other and the restaurant was emptying out by 9:00 pm. Guillermo Gutierrez came charging at us and honestly we felt he would punch someone. He said extremely disrepectfully "don't make me regret my decision to sit together" I then got upset and said, " sir, would you like for us to leave as seems you're very upset for no reason," rather than apologizing, " he looked at me and said 3 times you're more then welcome to leave." Later we noticed even the waiters felt bad about his behavior and said we are not sure why he treated us this way. He had a very racist and disrespectful tone. We are a family of respected physicians in the community and know a thing about customer care and service. This man was so rude. Our order that night (combined) was well over $1,000. We were there with parents and kids. This was absolutely uncalled for. We let it go, didn't say anything to him at the moment. We gave it few days to see if any apology would be made as this was totally uncalled for, nothing was done. All we were looking for was an apology about this obnoxiously disgraceful behavior. Obviously, no apology was made. We decided to call Sumo Maya to give some feedback as it had been on our minds and we felt being such regular customers, we had a level of duty to share some feedback. Upon calling, we asked to speak with the manager (not Guillermo, as we did not want this to be a conformation, but more of just feedback) Guillermo got on the phone and refused to let us talk to the manager, we (very respectfully) told him about the situation and our side as we thought maybe there was some miscommunication. He again was extremely rude on the phone and said, " we kept asking to join tables and so that's why he had the right to be rude to us," wow!!! He then said, "he has this all on camera," we said great, since this is all on camera, we would love to take this opportunity to review the cameras as we want to know what we did to deserve such horrible treatment on New Year's Eve. Guillermo then said, " no I will not let you review the cameras or recordings," we said well, if we all are being honest and really trying to figure out why he treated us so terribly we are not affraid to come and review the cameras. This manager then had the odacity to tell my husband that this conversation is over and basically hung up on him. We have NEVER been treated so badly by anyone. We will take this higher up and make sure this man is held accountable for his unprofessalism, racist, and disrespectful comments and attitude towards customers who did ABSOLUTELY nothing...

I’ve been hyping this place up and telling my friends about it ever since I first discovered it Dec 12, 2020. Since then I’ve been back several times. It’s always been great, but lately it’s been a bit of a miss. I’m not the type of person that harps on inconsistency because I understand that it’s not going to be a perfect experience every time. It’s easy to forgive when it happens once or twice, but lately something has changed. I feel like the last few times we’ve visited, the service wasn’t as great, but the food was still amazing so we looked past it, but after celebrating a birthday with friends for dinner, for the first time it was the other way around. The hostess was lovely and our server Alec was great, but some of the food items that we ordered were nothing short of mediocre. It was a bit underwhelming because I’ve been here before and I know what to expect. We ordered the Mexican Street Corn and the Pomegranate guacamole to start off with. The plating changed but they were both still great. We also got the “Wild Snow Crab” California Roll and the crab tasted a bit odd, — old and refrigerated — and not as buttery and fresh. The rolls were about the same quality as the rolls you pick up at a convenience store or Chinese buffet. For entrees we had the Shrimp Chingon Tacos, the Prime New York “Manhattan Cut”, the Wagyu Carne Asada, an order of the Carlitos Orange Beef, the Crispy Chicken Mole, the Yakisoba Pan Fried Noodles, and a few other sides. The Prime New York “Manhattan Cut” was exceptional and the Wagyu Carne Asada was very tasty. The Shrimp Chingon Tacos live up to their name. Probably some of the best shrimp tacos out there. I wish this was the same for the other dishes. The Yakisoba Pan Fried Noodles and the Carlitos Orange Beef left much to be desired. They tasted low quality and could have been better, but where they truly missed the mark on was with their Crispy Chicken Mole. This dish put this place on the map for me. Their mole sauce was just incredible. In my last review you will see the first two pictures showing the chicken mole dish and the Mexican Street Corn. The following two pictures are from this experience. The mole sauce was missing in action. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t say I got mole sauce in my dish. It was a watered down version of what the mole sauce is supposed to be. It was lackluster and very disappointing. When our waiter asked how my entree was I was honest, but I understand that it wasn’t his fault. Something has definitely changed and the quality of food has become inconsistent. Regrettably, this is causing some dishes to go down hill. For the price you pay to eat here, it should be better.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Review Date: Dec 12, 2020 Try their Chicken Mole! Some of the best I’ve ever had! (I recommend it with a side of their handmade corn tortillas). I was pleasantly surprised with this place. From their Modern Sheek decor to their ambience, it was a home run. Our waitress Jordyn was exceptional! The manager came and checked on our table as he did his rounds around the restaurant. Their menu items bring a perfect balance of Mexican staples with a flare of Asian classics. We had their pomegranate guacamole as well and it was exquisite. Their mojitos and margaritas were also pretty incredible. Basically, everything we ordered, from their fancy take on street corn, to their sushi rolls, we weren’t disappointed. Definitely a five star experience! -If you’re in Scottsdale, this is one place you can’t...
Read moreI was extremely disappointed with the level of service provided by our server and upper management of the restaurant. We came to Sumomaya celebrating my best friend‘s bachelorette. At first glance, the service was great. They were accommodating to certain dietary restrictions, such as gluten soy and tree nuts. They went out of their way to ask if the chef could prepare menu items with these in mind.
However, once we ordered, it, took a turn for the worst. The kitchen had to deliver our food, our server hardly came to check on things and never asked to refill water or alcoholic beverages. Towards the end, we were delivered dessert in which we didn’t ask for. It was a pleasant surprise minus the fact that we had no silverware to eat it with. We had to flag another waiter over to inquire if this was for us and whether or not we could have silverware to eat it. When our waitress returned the table, she said sorry it was an accident, but enjoy. At that point we asked for the check.
Upon paying the bill, I noticed that the receipt did not match what we ordered. I had to flag another waiter down to help rectify our bill as the one I paid for was over $100 more. Our waitress then brought the correct receipt out with a pen and little explanation on next steps as to how I was going to get my money back or when they were going to run my card for the new bill. We sat and waited more before I got up to ask for a manager. Instead of saying a manager will be right with you… They said go to the front desk and ask for a manager…. I went to the front desk where I spoke to a manager, who said let me get my other manager…. at this point, multiple staff were involved all of which didn’t had zero empathy about the awful experience we were having. At no point were we rude in fact, we were very understanding of the situation however, due to us being late to a reservation, I asked to be compensated. Nothing was taken off the bill for the awful experience we had and for having missed our next reservation. This put a damper in our celebration that night to say the least.
The food was good and the atmosphere was nice but if you care about good service, I recommend against eating at Sumomaya unless they have a positive change...
