I will preface this by stating I came towards the end of the evening after the Car Show so I get that folks might be tired but it wasn't busy when I came in. However that can't be an excuse for the service I received.

I sat outside and waited for waitstaff that never came. I went inside to get a menu and waited for that, too. Then I went outside to see what I wanted to eat and drink. Unfortunately, they must have lost me because I had to go back in and order food and drink at the bar rather than at my table. Fifteen or twenty minutes later the bartender came out and told me he FORGOT MY ORDER!

You'd think that would be enough but even after finishing eating I had to go in to seek out staff to pay my bill. Somewhat surprised they didn't ask me to bus my own dishes, too.

So, in other words, the service was painfully sub-par.

As to the food, it was fine but the gumbo was topped with a three pepper salsa that only served to make the dish super spicy as opposed to complementing the flavors. It was on the verge of not being edible and maybe it wasn't for someone who doesn't like spicy food. The salad was good but that is a salad. I've heard other things are tasty but I can't speak to those.

I may go back but the service left a bit to be desired so...

I'm a reuben guy. It's my jam, as the kids say. It's usually the first thing I try at a place if they have it on the menu. I've been eating them for over a quarter century, and I still remember the restaurant in northern Minnesota where as an 11-year-old I started that culinary journey.

The reuben here is approximately the perfect reuben.

Doused in butter, but on sturdy enough thick rye to handle it without losing integrity or crispness. Red cabbage instead of the typical sauerkraut brings something new to the conversation. Served hot enough to keep all that swiss cheese melted. House made thousand island that is creamy and nestled in all the nooks and crannies, without upstaging the corned beef.

That corned beef. So tender and flavorful. The star of the show.

Their method of finishing it in the oven has changed the way I make reubens. Hats off to the...

Very disappointed... my husband and I just moved to the area and were very excited about trying this place in our neighborhood. We got there around 12:45pm and placed our order around 1:00pm. At about 1:15 my husbands soda was empty and then around 1:25 so was mine. Our server had not been back but I slowly noticed that everyone that arrived after me was eating and receiving refills on their drinks. The server then came by around 1:40 to inform us she forgot to place our order but with no real sincere sorry and then placed complimentary bar nuts in front of me. I’ve worked in food and bev my whole life and the server knew it was my first time in because we discussed it while I was ordering my food. I thought the bar nuts were a little insulting and decided to leave and I never do that. So far I’ve been really upset with Seattle’s food and...

There are many things to like about this place. We have been going there for several years, easily dozens of times. The best thing about 74th (as we call it) is the reuben sandwiches. I have been a bit of a stickler on reubens for decades, and I am rarely satisfied with what most establishments put out. But 74th is probably the best I have had; that is the main reason we have been coming back again and again. The beer and ale selection is good, mostly local, and varies, so there is always something different to try. The service is competent and friendly, but can be a bit slow if they are busy. We rarely have other items on the menu besides the reuben, but when we stray, they are all good as well.

I headed to Greenwood for some gumbo at 74th Street Ale House. I have had this dish and have often cooked it many times. It is a complex but flavorful dish with many ingredients, but the key is the roux. Flour, olive oil and canola oil are sloooowly browned and thickened. When the roux is ready a pile of vegetables, meats, and spices are added to the pot with broth. The mixture then simmers on low heat for hours. When ready, the gumbo is served over rice. 74th Street is the master! This bowl was as delicious as ever. I also had some delicious, spiced nuts as an appetizer. The service was slow.
