1st time visit. We were quickly seated since there wasn't hardly anyone there. Ordered the artichoke, crab dip for the appetizer, the menu made it seem delicious. Disappointed with the first bite, it was nowhere near sizzling as described in the menu, and tasted much like mayo and cream cheese with a little seasoning mixed in. The stuffed cabbage soup was delicious and had a great flavor. For our main courses we had the crab stuffed flounder, with rice and veggies on the side, and Cajun salmon with veggies, and fries. The flounder that was stuffed with a crab cake had minimal flavor and I've had better a large chain restaurants (so that doesn't say much for it) The veggies were overcooked, and the rice was probably the best part of the meal, though not great. The salmon that was supposed to be Cajun had minimal flavor though it was a good portion. Veggies as stated earlier were over cooked, but the fries had a much better flavor and had the right crispness that a fry should have. The service could have been better. We were already a little aggravated when she seemed to ghost us, and when she reappeared asked if we needed anything when drinks were clearly empty. She then ghosted us again, upon reappearance she was helping the table behind me. Out of nowhere she was leaning over my should and complaining about how the man behind me was being f-ing difficult. I dodn't know her and this came uninvited and out of nowhere. When we were leaving the bar tender was standing be hind the bar stuffing her mouth with food. It's understandable that the staff also needs to eat, but usually they do so at most restaurants on a break, when someone else is covering for them, and it is done discretely. Over all the atmosphere is great, and they could have so much potential. I'll give it another try because maybe they were having a bad night, but I can't help but wonder if we...
Read moreThis is one of my favorite seafood places and has been for over 20 years. Everything is fresh, crispy and hot, though the menu is more limited than I would like (I was hoping for something like a fisherman's platter with a choice of 3 kinds of fried seafood). They didn't have ANY combo platters, just fish OR shrimp..! Also no fried shellfish. we ordered the fried calamari rings appetizer also. Everything came out within 5 minutes, including the entrees. It wasn't a huge deal, but it did make me feel a little rushed as I like to linger and was not in a hurry..! The waitress was attentive, and checked on us often. We mentioned we were freezing (they had several of the clear panels wide open on a windy, chilly day. She was kind to move us further down to a section where the screen was already closed, them lowered the panel behind my seat. We told her twice more that we were still chilly, and all she said was, "Oh... I'm sorry." She didn't close any more panels though she could have, the place was not crowded. I heard the people at the table behind me ask the server to shut the panel behind them and he said, "Oh I... don't know how, I've never done that before." He didn't tell anyone in the back or ask to have someone show him how (there is an electric switch to raise and lower them) All of the waitstaff were wearing hoodies but yeah, let us be wind-whipped. My hair was all over the place..! Still, Blackfins is nice right there by the river, quaint, clean and pleasant, the food was fried perfectly, with a crunchy exterior; the fish was flaky and the calamari was tender. I will be back! They just need to train their waitstaff to close those screens on windy, cold days..! Oh and I have to say - I forgot my doggie bag at the table, my waitress noticed and ran after me out into the parking lot to make sure I went home with that. So... I am very...
Read moreMy Son was in town for his birthday. We all love the atmosphere at Captain Hirams and he was staying there at the hotel for a few days so we met him there for dinner Sunday evening. We have a Maltese service dog who is an angel. Never have we seen or had for that matter, a dog so well trained, obedient, chill, or sweet. We have taken her there 3 other times. This time however, we were instructed we could only have her on the wood floor outdoor area, which was fine. That was not the case the other times, we've had her there on the sand and in the dining area both. This time about every 15 minutes or so, the manager would come to the table and say something about the dog. Either we had her too close to the table while my fiance was holding her or when we ask our server for a booster chair so she could be up closer to us while we ate, he came by to tell us "no, they are for humans" the next time it was the chair we had her on was not for dogs and he had to put it back. It was just always something, as I said she is an angel and we have NEVER experienced this kind of treatment with our dog anywhere we have ever taken her. Not even the other 3 times we have had her there. It was a very unpleasant and unwelcoming evening to say the least. I realize there are rules, and not everyone has a dog that identifies as human or thinks of their dog as their child, like we do, but come on, maybe focus on the eight, 10 year old soccer team boys that are running through the place disrupting people's quiet enjoyment instead of an angel dog that nobody else even knows is there. Our little girl has terminal cancer and we don't like to leave her. We want her last days/weeks/months? to be spent with us, because that's what she loves to do. We will not be going back to Captain Hirams as long as God continues blesses us with...
